Ammo storage

Well it is for several XD's so I figures someone here could help. I am reloading most of what I shoot and have thought a used, non-working refrigator would be a good place to store loaded ammo & components to keep it away from moisture, etc. I used to be a firefighter and have seen several places burn down and the refrig was usually left standing, even a couple times I found a cool beer there to quench my thirst after dousing the blaze. Anyone know why this wouldn't be a good place to store my ammo, powder & primner???

Howdy Riverbend.

Sounds like a pretty good idea to me. Then again, I am also a retired firefighter, and as you know we are all a few fries short of a happy meal!

I would suggest a good sized latch that you could put a pad lock through, for security reasons, and I would also consider a few openings strategically placed to avoid any pressure build up that may occur if for some crazy reason they should all blow up at the same time. (Not very likely).

I keep my reloads in a metal cabinet with a lock on it. A refrigerator is the same thing, but with thicker walls.

I would not consider it to be fire proof though.

Thanks guys

I wanted to see what others thought before going to pick up a non working frig that has been made available.
I do use the Mil ammo cans and each has silica packs inside, and the frig would be inside a locked outbuilding and it, itself would have a 4" wide 1/8 thick wrap, all the way, around 321 stainless steel flange/lock hasp I intend to make at work. I have added these to all my cheaper gun safes and the hasp is saw proof as are the round high security masterlocks. I just wanted to do what I could short of installing a sprinkler system to keep the stuff as safe from fire as long possible, and crisp for use when needed. The mil ammo cans have done that job pretty good for 30 years now for some ammo(odd stuff only) I have had that long, now with the addition of the XD's I tend to load 1,000 at a time and need a better place than the ever growing stack of ammo cans.
anyone with a better idea, please let me know.
Thanks,

i don't see why the fridge wouldn't work, especially with the security your talking about adding to it, after that the only concern would be moisture you could purchase one of those gun safe dehumidifiers that i have seen advertised in cabelas.

I use a light bulb in a old refrigator to keep welding rod dry in the farm shop. Just replace the doorswitch with a toggle switch & you can turn it off when you don't need it.
