XD45 Barrel - Exterior Profile

Long time watcher to the forum here: finally registering and speaking up.

I picked up an XD45 tactical today and noticed the "step" in the contour of the barrel while cleaning.

Is the barrel of the XD45 supposed to be thicker at the muzzle? The middle of my barrel is approx .582" in diameter. The muzzle end is .589" in diameter. There is a definiate raised step in the contour.

My XD9 service has no such step on it's barrel.

Mine does. It wasn't really noticeable until after I polished the blue off the barrel, though. It's definately thicker near the muzzle with a little "step" as you call it.

Unfortunately, all I had available right now was the crappy cell phone camera... but here's a picture of my XD9 service muzzle. I drew an arrow where the "step" is and the barrel becomes thicker.

It's much easier to see, and more obvious, in person.

I noticed that on my first cleaning even before I shot my XD45 Tactical. My theory is that they did that for a tighter barrel fit in the slide. Another thing I noticed right away was how much tighter on the lockup my XD was compared to my last Glock 21.

I don't have a .45 but both of my XDs had/have the rise. My XD9 had it and my current XD40 have a slight "bulge" toward the muzzle.

GW45NUT has it right when he said that it's for lock-up.
As the slide recoils back and the barrel tilts down to unlock, the smaller diameter, back from the muzzle, gives extra sliding clearance.
When the slide goes back to battery and the barrel tilts back up to lock, the larger diameter portion of the barrel end makes for a nice fit in the slide.
My SA 1911-A1 has the very same step in the barrel as my XD-45C.
I think that many locked-breech blow-back weapons probably have that.

Thanks everyone. I figured it was supposed to serve as some form of a barrel bushing. Or perhaps the machinst fell asleep at the lathe!

Here's the very pronounced step in mine

If you can see the 7 thousandths of an inch with your naked eye you really should think about a career in quality control!

God, I worked as a QA engineer on an internship. Talk about the same old grind running test cases all day long, every day. That job bored me to tears and required 0 skills or thought whatsoever. I hope for people's sake that it's different elsewhere.
