In a polymer frame pistol, compactness and carry ability is entirely appropriate. That being said, I fully understand and share your interest in a battle pistol. So here's my advice: now that you've joined the .45 ACP fraternity, save up for a full size 1911. Whether you do so or not, though, you'll be very well armed and well served by your new XD. Have fun and do share your experiences.

On the question of magazines, it has been my recent observation that they're now relatively available from a number of reputable sources. I saw them today, as a matter of fact, at Cabelas @ about $25/ea. I would advise you to check with XDTalk.com sponsors, and then Midway, Brownell's, etc.
Thanks Sixgunner,

That was the solid feedback I was hoping for. I thought 1911 was at first the way to go. I mean it's gnarley, when I though "Mmmm .45 ACP" I was like Duh, 1911. Well then I started thinking as to why I wanted this particular caliber. The realization I came to was that it was for "ugly" work. In the trenches....should I EVER find myself in that size of a pile.

The XD when I first shot it in a 9mm a year ago was also an immediate consideration. I would love to have a nice 1911 on my desk for the occasional shoot, or as a family classic of some sort. As I said, you can't knock em, they are sweet.

I will check the XD supporters first! That is a great thought.

I'll post up some photos when it arrives.

Next I am going after a threaded barrel and a particular cls.III trinket.

Going to a local gun show this weekend so who knows what I may come home with. a rail light or laser may be in order, who knows.

Thanks a lot dudes.

Foon
