Slide stays open prematurely
I haven't shot a gun in years, but I'm in the market for a new one and I'm not sure what I want yet. So, I thought the smart thing to do, besides reading rants and raves on the intarweb, was to go to a range that had a variety of guns to rent and try them out myself. The XD45 was absolutely my favorite after trying seferal different makes, models and calibers.
However, there was one time when I was shooting when the slide stayed open. I could see that there were still rounds left in the magazine. And after releasing the slide, I was able to continue firing until the magazine was empty and the slide stayed open again. I'm assuming that this isn't supposed to happen? I don't think this woud be considered a failure to feed since the round fed properly once I released the slide. Has anyone else experienced this? Do you think it has something to do with the fact that it was a rental using probably not the best ammo? |

My guess would be that your thumb was pressing on the slide release lever just enough to catch it.

My slide locked back on my 5" maybe my 75th round fired, mid-mag. After examining the pistol closely to be certain how it works, I decided it had to be my thumb.
YMMV.

Not an uncommon mistake. Many semi-autos can be inadvertantly locked back with a misplaced thumb. A little work on your grip and a little practice and it won't happen again.
So go get that XD45!

I just got my new XD40 and this happened to me, but only with the extended magazine. The small magazine did not have this issue so I wanted to blame the hardware.
After seeing this thread I took my gun down to the shop where I bought it and we all noticed that my pinkie finger on my right hand sort of slips under the grip with the 9 round mag, which lowers my thumb away from the slide lever. With the extended grip on the big magazine, it allowed my thumb to stray up to the lever while dry firing in the store, lazy technique I guess. I couldn't reproduce the error of course, empty mag and all, but still it seemed pretty obvious that it was me. Of course my Glock owning friends are now talking sh!t, but whatever, I feel that's a problem with my technique, not the gun's fault. (btw this is my first post so...hi |

It's your grip. I bet it rarely or never happens after the first or second round. Therefore, you are probably regripping as you work your way through the magazine, perhaps even milking the grip, which is not good.
