Finally got me a XD-45

I just finished the paperwork and payed for the gun. Now I just have to wait till the 14th till I can pick her up. I purchased a service model. Last week I went to the range and rented a tactical .45 and I wasn't digging the recoil. My friend had already bought a service model .45 and I shot that one, and for me, it just felt better overall, so I cancelled my order for a 5" and changed it to a 4".

I think I'm going to name this one Chasey, named after the porn star Chasey Lane. I have this thing about naming my guns after porn stars. It just seems like the cool thing to do.

Congrats on the purchase but it's a sad situation when you have to wait to bring it home. Sorry to hear that part.

Either way (4" or 5") you just can't go wrong. Enjoy!

Wait a minute guy. What are you thinking here? A shorter Service model will have less recoil than the Tactical model with more mass? Wrong!! Whatever, you will still enjoy the Sevice model. As for naming your weapon after a porn star, to each his own. It sounds like you have watched Full Metal Jacket too many times. Why don't you name it Charlene?

Yeah, the cooling off period is dumb. The background check usually only takes 3 days, but they want you to wait for your gun just in case you are buying it to kill someone. Oh well. The 10 day wait isn't as bad as it seems. The first gun I bought, the waiting period sucked for the first week, as it felt like it took forever, but then the last few days just flew away. My second gun wasn't as bad, the 10 days came and went real fast. The trick is to just not think about he gun.

It's about the girth, not the length.

Well, in this case, the extra mass of the slide seems to be adding to the muzzle flip of the gun. I talked to a few of the guys working the range and my friend that I went with, who also shot both guns side by side and they all agreed with me about there being more felt recoil and a bit more slip from the 5" over the 4". All of us thought it was wierd that this was the case, but it was what it was. The only factor that I can't put into the equation is how many rounds have gone through the XD-45 I rented. I know the 4" that my friend had has about 500 rounds through it, but the 5" I rented was fairly new as they just got it in the last month or two, but I'm sure it's had around 1500 - 2000 rounds in it easy. So, the recoil spring is fairly worn and that might be where the extra flip and felt recoil are coming from. I don't know, I'm just guessing, but the 4" was just easier for me to shoot, so I bought one. Well, that and they told me that it would probably be about 3 months before they got it from SA anyway.

On a side note, while doing the paperwork I was checking out a small white envolope and it was the first bullet fired out of the pistol. The date one it reads 13-09-06, so it will be 2 months and 1 day old from when it was test fired when I pick it up. I also need to remove some of the oil as they seem to have over oiled the crap out of this gun, it has oil seeping out of everything. I guess they really didn't want it to rust.
