Dryfire Help

Guys...Yes you have another newbie to take under your wing. Having shot competitive trap for the past ten years my Kreighoff feels like an extension of my body whereas my newly purchased .45 service has humbled me considerably. But just like anything new, im trying to be a good student.

I have been shooting low and to the left (heard that before?). I realize it is in my poor execution of trigger pull and I need to practice to feel comfortable. Dry firing with my trap guns and a snap-cap is pretty straight forward. Question is how to effectively use .45 snap caps in my automatic. Any experience would be helpful.

By the way, an experienced pistol shot at my club was eating the center with my gun at 50ft. The gun is doing its thing.

Some peple use the snap caps in the magazine, and some people (like me) don't even use them at all. Load a bunch into your magazine (I like A-zoom) and just snap and rack! Pay close attention to that front sight when you take your sight picture!

Try putting a little more of your trigger finger on the trigger. Also, try using the sear reset. Pull (yeah, I'm old school...I don't squeeze or press triggers, I pull 'em) the trigger, hold it to the rear and recock the gun. Now let the trigger out slowly and you will feel the sear reset itself. Now begin your trigger pull from there and you will find it somewhat easier; you will also eliminate "trigger slapping."

Load up your snap caps and put a small target on top of the TV. While you watch your favorite show, pick up the pistol during commercials and do a little dry fire work.

Kind of what I thought. I guess that I am assuming that dry firing without a cap wouldnt be good for the firing pin?

It won't be good for the roll pin that holds the firing pin in place. Other than that most all modern firearms can be dry fired.

Maybe on your Kreighoff, not on an XD.

If your low you are most likley anticipating recoil just relax and you should be surprised when it fires.....

+1

You're probably squeezing your non-trigger fingers in anticipation of the recoil. Try having a friend load your mag with live rounds and a snap cap randomly placed in. You'll see exactly what you're doing wrong when you "fire" that random snap cap.

Good call, I have a friend that was trained at one of the better combat shooting schools (Gunsite or Thunder Ranch, not sure). One of the exercises taught is to grip your gun with just the first three fingers and to fire with the pinkie and ring finger off the grip. The point of this lesson is to show how grip affects your target grouping. I am planning on trying this next time out to see if this helps with firing discipline.
