I have to say, if this is what is going to be the 'small' .45 then it's a disappointment. If it's a step to a 45 SC then it's fine. My current Carry guns, a Para Carry 6.45 and Colt Defender, just got job security for the forseeable future.

I was in the market for an XD45. I currently carry a 40 Service and the reduced grip length coupled with the ability to use the larger magazine is a winner for me. If I already had a service however, I'd be disappointed.

No, it's not exactly what I was hoping for - I too wanted a subcompact XD.45 but I suspect (complete conjecture on my part) that they tried the subcompact route, experienced cycling problems, and this is the compromise they came up with (they've got the sales momentum so why not). Then again, I could be wrong but historically subcompact .45s have been problematic, witness the G36 (always a cloud over that gun, perhaps somewhat unfairly) and the litany of 1911s subs that ended up with less than stellar reputations for reliability. I have an XD45 Service. Is a cut-down grip alone enough of an incentive for me to rush out with cash in hand and buy the compact? I can't say it is. Given the choice between a slightly shorter grip and 3 extra rounds, I would opt for the additional firepower but that's me. To me, size wise-print-wise, there is not enough of a difference to pursuade me to buy the new XD45ACP compact. And even if I didn't already own the Service model, I still don't think I would consider it - I'd buy the Service model instead. Just my preferance. Yours may differ.

Not quite the news I was hoping to hear but considering I just got a G27 and don't have the change for another toy, I am breathing a sigh of relief. If it was a sub, I'd sell my blood to get one.

This may be a silly question, but does that "XD Gear Extension" snap onto the gun or does it slide on and off with the magazine?

'Been re-thinking the merits of the Compact a little more after going to the SA site. Without the 13-round mag extension, the gun looks top heavy. However, with the mag extension installed, it's back to looking normal - I guess I am just used to the look of the Service. Having said that, if you don't own a Service, you do have the added advantage of a slightly more concealable weapon. Add the optional mag extension and bingo, you've got a high capacity Service, all rolled into one. I guess the question is, how much added concealability does the shorter grip really provide (do I benefit to any large degree, nice to have I guess, but the right holster can make just about any gun disappear) and would I just end carryng the gun with the 13-round mag in anyway.
If nothing else, the Compact gives you flexibility. Already own a Service? I think it's a non-starter for many, "thank you, we'll pass." Don't have a Service and the Tactical doesn't meet your needs? The Compact may be the ticket.

Anyone think SA will offer a XD45 compact lower to those who want to convert their service/tac. XD45? I think offering a conversion kit with a new lower, compact mag, and full size sleeve where you exchange all the parts from one frame to the other would be a good idea on SA's part.
