Bad Range Day

So there I am on the range, shooting a rifle qual. course that requires a transition to handgun. Down goes the AR, out comes the XD-45. Bang, Bang, CLICK! Tap, Rack, CLICK! Now I'm PO'd, Tap, Rack, Bang, JAM! Doublefeed. Failed the qual. course for taking too much time and had to reshoot.

So here's what happened. I loaded the magazine for my XD-45 out of a box of department ammo and some knucklehead had placed .40 S&W ammo into the 45acp box. Yup, 40's will fit and hold in a 45 mag. They will even feed through the 45. The trouble comes when the round hits the chamber. It is not properly head spaced, so it won't go bang every time. And, of course, it is too small for the chamber. When the 40 went bang in my 45, it blew out the 40 casing to fit the 45 chamber. The 40 casing then could not be extracted (I tapped it out with a cleaning rod) and the doublefeed occurred.

I always check my ammo before I load it into my magazines. Except this time. I was chatting with another officer while I loaded up and didn't notice the 40 S&W ammo that I was loading into my mags. Luckily for me, my pistol was not damaged and it happened on the range and not the street.

So why am I boring you with this? As a reminder to check and double check your ammo if you shoot more than one caliber. Especially your carry ammo.

Seriously... .40 and .45 is a pretty big difference in size...you must have not been paying attention at all.

Anyway, glad nothing happened to your gun or you.

I had a friend that shoved a G17(9mm) mag into a G23(40) and it went bang once and did not eject. The case swelled so badly I had to dismantle the gun and hammer the case out. Very bad times.
