Policing Brass

Have searched the forum but no joy.

When we can sell our boat in FL and get back to TX, we'll break out the arms and reloading equipment, AND purchase an XD45ACP (service or tac).

The XD will be my first centerfire auto. How far does it throw brass? Short of slithering around the range, how do you collect your brass for reloading?

Many thanks ... and apologies if this is an old topic.

Was at an indoor range yesterday and it threw it about 2 feet back to the right. Easy to sweep up and collect if you are in to reloading, which I am not. Seems like going to an indoor range would be a good place to collect brass though, because there were drums full of them. I personally threw away 300 casings. Good luck!

When I shoot at my friend's farm, I lay down an old shower curtain. It catches most of my brass.

We mainly use an indoor range. They have dust pans and brooms. When we go in, if the floor isn't clean, I sweep it. My Service ACP sends the brass into the outer reaches of the universe. I've had people in the next lane and two lanes down hand me brass that has landed on them. About every 40 or 50 rounds, I stop and clean up. It collects all my brass and gets it out from under my feet. Right now I'm sitting on about 1100 .45 casings.

brass pickup

At our outdoor range I lay down a small tarp and position it to catch the brass. When I am done, I just pick up the corners and watch the brass forma pile in the middle. Shift it around a bit and pore them in my spent brass bag.

Well at the indoor range we just sweep them up. Outdoors it's called 500+ pickup.....

When I police my brass I want to make sure I know it's mine and not someone's 3 time reloaded, super hot, experimental casing. I use a marker to put a fat black line on the bottom of the casing. That way I know I have my brass and not someone's junk.

I've seen others mark the case also with a marker. One guy had different colors for number of times the brass was shot. He used red to indicate time to throw away, blue was 1st reload and black as 2nd. He also had color cordinated boxes. He had way too much time on his hands....

Thats what i normally do i just use a red or green sharpey and draw a straight line across the end of the casing. Havent done it too much lately because i am too lazy to pick it up at the outdoor range. I have been considering using some type of box and just try to stay in the same area that way most of it should fly into the box.
