XD45 Tactical Accuracy again

I was just about to have a trigger job and new sights put on my XD45 tactical ... when I started to have second thoughts about whether the pistol is accurate enough to spend that kind of $ on ... I want to be very specific about this ... I have over 500 rounds through my tactical ... using WWB ... sandbag assist ... 25 yards ... stock sights ... and new glasses so sight is very clear ... good grip ... surprise release of trigger ... best I can do (better than one of the instructors at the range could do with my tactical) ... 4-3/4" groups consistently ... never better ... sometimes worse (6")... same setup with Kimber TLE 45 ... 2" groups consistently ... so ... my question ... for those who have the tactical (and service for that matter) ... would you say my XD is not shooting up to what the XD should be shooting to ... and secondly ... what should I do about it ... Springfield Armory will refit the stock barrel for a few $ ... could have a new Barsto barrel fit ... or I could look for another firearm ... I'm reluctant to spend more $ on trigger job and sights if the inherent accuracy is just not there ... thanks ... John

Well, I just got a 4 lb trigger job. Just got the gun back today and won't shoot it until tomorrow. I can tell already that it is much improved.

What I can also say is that in my experience each handgun is different. I shot better the first time I shot the XD45 a few weeks back when I bought it then after several trips with a Sig P220 (which has a rep as the most accurate 45 out of the box). I was just never any good with that thing. With the XD45 I had decent groups from it stock. It could be a weight issue or barrel length issue, I don't know.

I'll report back tomorrow about how the trigger job works.

The Trigger Lets It Shoot

I have a 45ACP Service. I didn't like the gun at first because of the trigger. It was very heavy, too much take up and did not feel consistent when shooting it slowly. After the 4# trigger job (thanks CC) - much, much tighter groups!

It still does not "target" shoot as accurately as my Kimber Royal at 25 yards but the trigger job was worth the money. Before you spend the $200, shoot someone's piece that has had trigger work on their XD or their Gl**k. I think you will agree it is remarkable.

Actually 4.5" at 25 yards with that type of ammo (WWB) is good "combat accuracy". Please remember that Rob L. with his resources and God given talent has a tuned XD that shoot's2" groups.... You give some accuracy away for reliability and again Price point.

I've had good success (groups) with Federal Hydrashock, and Hornady TAP ammo. Avg. 3+". the best group was 2.75 with 165Gr. (Ransom rest) from a XD 45 ACP service model. I have not Ransom rested my XD 9 Tac., but I believe I'll gain .5-1" with that gun....Will see.

IMO the trigger job I had done by Springer Precision noticably tightened my broups. Can I shoot 2" at 25 yards? No, but the TGO, shooting a triggered XD with a refit barrel is shooting 2" groups at 25 so I am not heartbroken by my skill sets.

I guess the question is how accurate do you need/want the pistol to be and are the limitations the pistol or the shooter. I know at this point that it is my skills at shooting that are the limiting factor.

Readers digest version: Get the trigger job from Springer or CC. It dramatically improves the grouping.

An excerpt from an e-mail I received tonight:

Scott, I took the XD to the range last evening. Your work... has produced a weapon that rivals my Springfield 1911 (Black Stainless™ PX9152L). Just like the 1911, I am able to place 1" groups @ 15 yards with no problem. When I first purchase the 5" XD 45 ACP I was disappointed with groupings and consistency but you have cured that problem.

I shoot bunches of XD's and I just don't see accuracy problems overall. The barrel design is a proven design (Sig.)

I don't like refitting stack barrels, I think it is better to go to the Barsto gunsmith fit barrel.
