Its possible that the cartridge is in front of the extractor when you close the slide. That would prevent the extractor from grasping the case and pulling it out of the chamber. This can happen if you inserted the cartridge in the chamber without a mag and then slammed the slide shut. I would lock the slide to the rear and insert a pencil or wood dowel in the barrel and push it out just as someone already suggested. If you're uncomfortable with that then take it to a smith.

I think what that's exactly what happened JohnC. I think he put in a loose bullet, just like if you were doing a single shot on a bolt gun or something, closed the slide and jammed the round in there. As you said, if it's in front of the extractor, then it won't come out, but it's strange that he can't depress the magazine release button.

Sorry for the delay in response..had some health care issues in the family, so i've been extremely busy and "tied up" to say the least!!
To clear up myself.. i am experienced with firearms -- i am not in the morning unchambering a round with the clip in, i always pull out the clip then unchamber the round and store it unloaded and "uncocked" in a safe location!! sorry for not typing that correctly i was in a rush when i typed my first post! now again to clarify what is wrong! the gun has a live round in the chamber..clip can be put in and pulled out effortlessly, no problems there...however the slide WILL NOT slide all the way back when i try to "unchamber" the round..it slides back about 1" - 2" to reveal the back end of the round but will not go back any farther! Its stuck and wont fully slide back so i can unchamber the round!! any other suggestions on what to do?? im assuming i just need to lock it up and take it to a gunsmith to check it out, or else take it to the range and fire it?!?!?!?! i will be sure to check this board frequently now that i can! thanks in advance!! |

SFY03- Do not take it to the range and fire. Lock weapon and take it to a gunsmith. I would run the SA lock through the trigger guard (behind the trigger) and lock it to be safe. This will prevent the trigger from being fully pulled to the rear.

Sounds like to me your guide rod has shifted on you. There are several posts about this happening when the guide rod is removed and not reinserted correctly. Give the search a try, maybe whats going on in your XD.

The practice of unloading and loading a round every morning is a dangerous one if you keep using the same rounds. Each time you chamber the round it will set the bullet back a little bit. Eventually the bullet will move back enough to create a spike in pressure if the round goes off increasing the chances of a KB. While the risk with a lower-pressure round like .45 may be lower than with a high pressure round like .40S&W, it is still an unnecessary risk. Perhaps you should place the gun in a safe in the morning instead.
