I'm curious as to WHY someone would want a lanyard on a firearm?? Isn't a holster supposed to keep it from "running away"?

You have to be careful when using a lanyard. If not designed correctly it will do one of two things. Break to easy and not really do you any good, or take too much force to break and when you get the gun caught on something break your neck or strangle the wearer. A good lanyard need to break away with the right amount of force for good retention without severely hurting the user.

Theres actually a company that makes one, I can't remember the name, I'll have to look in my combat handgun magazine old issues, Theyre mainly for Hostile areas, or entry teams so that if you get knocked down or someone knocks the gun out of your hand its still attached to you... Theyre not for Every day Carry...

They make pistol leashes for police and tactical ops and stuff...supposedly (at least what i've heard), the pistol leash came from a SWAT operation or drug bust or something, and afterwards the creator couldn't find his 1911. They were looking for it, and one of the kids that lived next door found it and gave it to him..it had fallen out of his holster or something like that

Hmm... lost his 1911? Ended up at neighbor's house? Found by a kid? Yeah, that's not good. From a pro like SWAT...

They have been putting lanyard on handguns long before SWAT teams started loosing handguns. It was common for horse mounted calvary unit to use lanyards with there side arms. US Civil war maybe earlier.

All the fashionable mall ninja's have them .
It's the current drive people have to be Tacticool. They are useful in military/LEO circles but IMHO don't have much use in a day to day CCW situation. But hey, whatever floats peoples boats. I probably don't need another AR(but I'm getting one).............unless zombies attack........but that's a different thread.
