yeah, you could do that but that is kinda sloppy lookin', isn't it?

somebody could make a polymer plug similar to the plugs for glocks but with the loop inside the polymer, like when they molded it.

Have the plug fit exact and then drill a small hole near the bottom all the way thru and hold the plug in with a roll pin or leave the plug a little rough or with holes or lines or something and then JB weld it in.

I'm thinking because someone wanted one would be a good enough reason.

Some people live more active lifestyles than others and that would be a good reason also.

I have used lanyards:
1. When it was mandated by unit policy.
2. I was spending a large amount of time riding around in the back of a Custom's Blackhawk.
3. I was on a unit that patrolled on quads.
4. When I am down at the farm riding around on four wheelers.

That is just my opinion and it is free of charge.

Why would you want one? Well, let's see here, airborne or maritime operations have already been mentioned as well as being mounted on horseback or ATV. When I went to Bridgeport, CA for mountain warfare school, one of our machine gunners M9 fell out of the holster but was saved from falling to the bottom of Browning creek by the lanyard. A few days later in the same spot, one young Marine's sling keeper came undone on his M-16 and it fell 65 feet to the bottom hitting every rock on the cliff on the way down completely destroying it! Then of course there is the Colin Powell incident in Germany. I forget if it was that he lost his pistol because he didn't have a lanyard and they eventually found it or if he would have lost it if it wasn't for a lanyard or exacly how the story went but that's another example of how they can serve a very useful purpose. Personally, when I go out to the field, I use a Gem-tech lanyard and have no problems with it. However, when I carry concealed I don't. It's all in what you do but to say that they serve no purpose at all is short-sighted.

mall ninjas

As long as we're on the subject of tacticool mall ninjas... Does anyone know if those plastic picatinny rail covers would fit on the rail on my XD45?

forgot to mention, if you were dead set on having one while carrying concealed you could use one of the retracting lanyards. They are supposed to steady your shooting also but I really wonder how well that would work. I remember seeing them in the Brigade Quartermaster catalog.

I guess I missed where the original poster said that he wanted this for a CCW. So why all the commentary on that? Why all the condemnation about such a simple and well proven concept.. retaining your weapon under several circumstances?

It doesn't look like there is an after market solution for the attachment point to the XD.. many have already suggested a few options for doing it yourself.

There are dozens of decent lanyards out there, this just might not be the best forum for checking out the options. Try Lightfighter.net... just tread lightly and make sure you do a good search before you post.

A lanyard is so old school. Put a pager on it. This IS a digital world!

gsh341, leashes are standard issue. You cannot imagine what a Court Martial is like if you loose your sidearm. Your a SGT? I would strongly advise you to use it and make your troops do as well.
First, leashes/lanyards are not standard issue.

Second, I recently retired as a Staff Sergeant, so I fully understand the penalties for losing a weapon.

Third, I would not use a lanyard unless operating from aircraft or boats on a regular basis because I would be unable to pass my pistol (had they issued one to me) to a soldier in need without wasting time undoing the lanyard. Not to mention, as a trucker there are WAY too may things for that lanyard to get caught on.

If one of my troops had really wanted a lanyard on a pistol, that would be up to them.

But it's moot point as the Army never saw the value of vehicle drivers having pistols in Iraq. They figured we could learn to shoot a M-16 or a M-249 SAW while driving.
