xd .45 Take Down Question

This is probably a stupid question but here goes anyway. From my understanding it is bad to dry fire a gun without a dummy round in place. If this is so how would i properly take down my xd. you have to lock the slide back, turn the lever so it is pointing straight up, then guide the slide back forward (cocking the gun in the process). To completely remove the slide, it is required that the trigger be pulled (according to the manual anyway) hence dropping the firing pin on an empty chamber. Should I not worry about this? I hope you understand my question, thanks guys.

thanks, thats what I figured. It would be odd for the SA xd manual to advocate the process i described above if it were bad for the gun. Could someone possibly explain to me why the xd is not negatively affected by empty chamber dry firing? Thanks!

Dry firing generally causes excesive stress to be placed on the firing pin. Where the primer should damp the pins motion the pin is now stopping by impulse. This is more of a concern with hammer fired and older firearms. Modern guns generally can be dry fired with no ill effect. I've probably dry fired my Walther P99 about 200,000 times with no ill effect to date. Of course, if you're going to do any dry fire practice I highly advise keeping the ammo out of reach at the same time as the gun. Last year one of my neighbors got arrested for negligent discharge and disturbing the peace when he accidently shot his tv.

carcassxd:

Dry firing is not a problem with XD. Springfield actually suggests that you do it. On page 7 of the manual, on the page headed BE A SAFE SHOOTER!, look at the fourth bullet point.
"practice operations by dry firing with the chamber empty"

and remember, before dis-assembling your gun -
1. make sure its not loaded
2. lock the slide back
3. make sure its not loaded
4. rotate takedown lever up, and gently release slide
5. MAKE DAMN SURE ITS NOT LOADED!
6. point muzzle against a SAFE backstop, and pull the trigger to release slide for field stripping.

Step 7. To avoid embarrassment, catch slide before it falls on the floor.
