Fiber Optic Sights?

Can somebody explain to me exactly what fiber optic sights are? I know what fiber optics are, and I know they are colored things in the sights. But what is so special about them being fiber optic? Do they light up or something?

Fiber optic sights take the light from other sources (overhead / sunlight / etc) and BRIGHTEN up to see them better.

Some Fiber Sights, like TFO's, have a radioactive gas in a tube BEHIND them, so the radioactive gas naturally glows in the dark, made brighter by the fiber optics, which is made EVEN brighter by other light sources.
