First time XD45 problem

Although the problem was with the ammo! When I bought my second XD from a local retailer, he threw in a box of some really crappy .45 reloads. They were lead semi-wadcutters with a really light powder charge as they felt more like shooting 9mm's then .45's.

I was mixing and matching the 230 grain ball reloads I'd recently made which I loaded to mimic the 230 grain Hydroshok's perfomance. No problems for a couple mags and then I started getting jams. The problem was FTE completely and at first I was worried the extractor had broken. But the 230 grain reloads were still working fine. So I'm thinking that as the gun got dirtier, the reduced load of the crappy ammo wasn't powerful enough to fully eject the spent casing. It should be noted that the XD fed the lead SWC's just fine and had the ammo been loaded hotter it likely would have fired all of them too.

Funny, but I was shocked when it first happened. As a life-long shooter of the 1911 platform, I am used to the occaisonal jam from FTF or FTE and had I been holding a 1911 wouldn't have hesitated to run through a quick 'tap, rack, assess' drill. But after putting a few thousand rounds through the XD with virtually no problems, when it jammed this time I was so surprised that stopped and scatched my head thinking, "Hmmm - that's odd!"

What a great gun. But as my carry piece, I guess I should start throwing in the occaisional deliberate FTF, FTE (snap cap or spent case in the mag) so I can get used to clearing my XD. I've been lulled into a sense of complacentcy by this gun's flawless performance!

Wink Reloads

I would just blame it on the reloaded Ammo.

That is a good idea for all of us to try, at least on occasion. With the reliability of the XD, Glock, and others today, many of us have become complacent w/ our abilities to deal w/ needing to clear our guns if the need arrises. As the Boy Scouts say "be prepared".

I shoot 230 grain hardball target ammo. No problems, unless you consider pay $10.00 a box a problem.
