Point shooting with your XD45

Anyone else practice this alot? I was at the range yesterday, and I had my XD45 Tac with new a new grip, nad point shooting took some getting used to. I was practicing how fast I could pick the gun up from tray and and fire with out using the sites. I was shooting all over the place, but at least I kept everything on the paper. With practice though(about an hours worth), I was able to group them in a 6" diameter at 10 feet. I'll keep the practice up though. I was shooting from hip level, should level, left handed, every different way i could think of. This gun shoots like a charm from everywhere!

Alot of departments practice point shooting. Most shoot outs are between 2 people within 8 feet of each other. You should be able to hit your target that close without using your sights. Also using your sights can cause tunnel vision. Point shooting helps the gun become an extension of you. Don't get me wrong though, point shooting is important but practice muscle memory shooting (Point shooting). Also peppering your target causes more stopage power.

I try to 'Point Practice' at least once every month or two, right and left handed as well as kneeling, even if it's only a few shots. It's a heck of a learing experience, but as stated above, 5'-10' is very likely going to be the distance you'll have to work with - and darn little time.

Funny, when I take my wife to the range with her S&W 686 every three months or so, that's all I have her practice. At first it was because she wears bifocal contacts and couldn't see the sights, but then I realized that if she grabs that thing in the middle of the night, that's exactly what she may have to do, point and pull. I'm just glad she lets me take her out to the range that often. Some of my friends wives shot the gun when they first got it and said "No problem" and haven't touched it since - in some cases, that's years and years.

It's a good drill once in a while...

to do that, you have to really get the butt of the gun close to you in order to keep your aim good. Gotta keep that grip really tight on the butt.. of the gun.

It appears more than one person on this forum can quote brokeback mountain. I think it's time to move on to another forum...
