Either hit the slide release or pull the slide back and then release slide. You don't want to ease the slide down because the round may not chamber properly and the breech may not lock up properly

Hit the release button and let the slide slam forward. If you were dealing with a unloaded weapon you'd want to ease it forward with your hand's assist.

I use the "slingshot" method - pull the slide back so that the slide release disengages then let go of the slide and allow it to slide forward. That way, it reduces wear on the slide release.

This is one of those topics that never end. Some say the slide catch/release will wear out. Some say it was designed for that. I've shot a Bersa 380 at a gun range with a worn out slide catch/release. Unless you hold the slide catch/release up, it releases the slide on the slightest bump.

Considering the amount of battering your cycle take during recoil. There is little you can do to harm the slide. Using either the slide stop or the sling shot method will work.

I have read where Glocks can be damaged by letting the slide slam forward with an empty magazine. I haven't heard anything about that with XDs.

Just FYI... You can't hurt the gun.
