Jammed Slide

Got a little problem. I have a 4" Springfield XD .45 ACP. Took it to the range, a buddy of mine was shooting it. Comes up to me and says, "This thing jams a lot. This is the third time." Thought, "Hmmm, never jammed on me before." Took the pistol from him, the slide was back about half an inch. Brass still in place, no bullet in the barrel. Tried to cycle the slide and it wouldn't budge. Bumped the back of the slide and it went forward into battery with the striker cocked. Pulled the trigger, tried to rack the slide, went back about half an inch, won't budge.

Surfed here for awhile, found the fix where someone said to use a brass rod and hit the barrel forward. Slide moved back about another 3/8", but is now jammed in THAT position, won't move forward OR back.

Any ideas on how to fix it? He didn't say there was a problem with the ammo (my loads, didn't say that they were light or kicked too much, when I slip the round forward of the extractor, the primer looks fine/no overpressure).

Empty the gun empty the gun.

Whack it again.

What happens is the breach end of the guide rod rolls slightly off center, where it needs to be in order for the slide to operate. The other models of the XD line have a notch in the locking block to cradle and center the rod, the 45ACP does not, hence the rod sometimes "rolls" slightly off center. Hence, whack the bugger.

Let me know how that works.

Yep, had the slide jam on me as well, and Tec is exactly right in what happened. See this thread for more info.

Good luck!

Cheers! M2

That's odd - my XD9 4" does not have any notch:

It looks just like the pics of the XD45's that people have posted.

That said, the slide has never jammed so I have no complaints.

It doesn't appear to be curved at all and certainly doesn't look like the pic on the left in this post:

Slide Jammed

I can roll the recoil spring assembly back and forth easily.

Tried that. I'm using a brass rod, and all I seem to be accomplishing is to gouge the end of the rod. Where on the barrel should I be whacking? I can't seem to make any progress, no matter what I do now. I can't get the guide rod to move around and the barrel doesn't even move inside of the slide at all. Nothing's moving!

You have to pull the slide at the same time. Similar to take down on a glock. rearward pressure on the slide helps get everything moving. You have to whack the barrel right on the muzzle. Plastic, rubber, or rawhide mallets work best.
