I have both a 9 and 45 XDm in 3.8, love them both, recoil is not an issue. Fun to shoot both.

I'd say it depends on if you plan to carry it or not. I carry my 4.5" in crossbreed supertuck and it's ok but I'd probably prefer the 3.8 for that. Mine is primarily a range gun though, so I like the full size.
I'd venture to say you'll be happy with either of them though...or perhaps the best decision would be both

FYI, 9mm .45", 45mm would be about 1.75".
The .45 will have more recoil but not excessive. You will notice the difference between the two.

Hello Agalindo Thank you for the correction. Still new to this.
My primary use would be range , not so much carry but wouldnt mind , I guess I am just looking for the best option for my dollar .

You will be much happier with the 3.8 when it comes time to CC.

Since you mention being new to this I would suggest 9mm cheaper to shoot so you get to shoot more often, you already have another 9mm so you don't have to by different ammo. Best bang for the buck.
Unless you reload 9mm is always cheaper to shoot than .45.

I have a ruger p89 9mm and an xdm 4.5" .45acp. Both have over 1000 rounds, and the xdm is fastly approaching 1500 rounds. Personally, I don't think the xdm kicks any more than my 9mm, at least not noticeably. If the gun is just for the range mostly, I would suggest the 4.5" model for a better sight picture. If you can shoot the m&p, you can shoot the the xdm just fine! Welcome and enjoy!
