They sell the 230 grain competition round that has around 725 fps which he tells me has a much less muzzle flip than the standard 230 grain which I think is around 830 fps for shooting IDPA etc... I ordered a box but havent tried it out yet. Will have a chance next weekend. I will let you guys know how it compares to the target load 230 grain. Thanks, Tony
If you get a true 725fps, it's a good just major 45 loads for IDPA. My load makes about 740fps, very soft. My other load is a 200gr @ 840fps, also soft shooting major.

Kinda gilding the lily, imho.

And, since they use the same bullet for both 230+P and 230 standard, the faster +P bullet tends to expand a bit more, but penetrate a bit less. Add in the extra recoil may slow down accurate follow up shots.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with them; in some platforms, I can't tell the difference between a +P and a standard (Glocks and the USP come immediately to mind). In others--like a lightweight 1911--you really notice the recoil, and it slows down follow ups.

Guess each person needs to decide if the little extra "oomph" with a 230+P is worth it to them.

Sorry, I have never really compared the two. I tend to just buy 230gr because I figure if I'm going .45 I might as well fire the big boys!

I tend to run 124gr in my XDM9 just because it is middle of the road between 115 and 147gr.

Seems like the 230gr is the standard. I talked to some guys in SC named precision one ammo that have a competition load. He sent me some 230gr 45 but was loaded with 730fps where the standard load is usually around 830fps which has considerably less muzzle flip. I shot some this past weekend and was really pleased with the performance of this ammo. Just FYI, I have no connection with the company.

Reality, a well designed 185gr is going to be fine. It's still 45cal, even in FMJ form. If I am carrying a 1911, I get one add'l round in 40, might as well carry 45acp & get the advantage of a larger bullet for a larger wound.
