Cleaning My XD

There may already be a post about this but I searched and didn't find one.

I just got my XD45 about a month ago and took it to the range this weekend. Shot 100 rounds of WWB and the gun looked really dirty after.
All I have right now to clean it is the brush that came w/ it ... but I obviously can't get to everything w/ that.

What suggestions do you guys have for a cleaning kit?

And is there instructions somewhere on how to clean the XD?

You're help is appreciated!

I didnt buy a "cleaning kit" I just use hoppes, wipes, rem oil, copper bore brush and a "nylon tooth brush"..

I dont know if others do this and if they suggest not to but for the wipes I use an old white undershirt cut up into 3"x3" ( or larger) squares.

You dont need to completely take apart your XD every time you have shot it but it should be done say every month.

For tuff to clean spots around and in the bore, I use break free

Steps:: Wipe down everything as well as you can with a wipe dipped in Hoppes. (make sure that the wipe isnt totally soaked, ring it out a little after you dip that wipe) you dont need to saturate your gun with Hoppes..

I use the nylon "tooth brush" dipped in hoppes on the inside of the slide followed by wiping with a wipe until clean ( make sure that tooth brush isnt dripping wet when you start scrubbing).. Let all dry for a few mintutes and or better yet shoot all that Hoppes out you couldnt get to with some compressed "dry" air. Then wipe everything again with a dry wipe..

Next take your barrel and dip your copper bore brush that is attatched to the cleaning rod into the Hoppes bottle and insert it through the bore end making complete "all the way in and out strokes" dont stop in the middle then come back through, that will scratch the inside of your barrel. I do this over and over and over, slow and then fast. Then take that brush off the rod and attatch the wipe holder attatchment with a wipe with a little Hoppes on that, run that through the barrel the same way you did with the copper brush, change out the wipes as neccersary, and even run the brush through again if nessesary..

After clean, run a dry wipe through the barrel, to get all that Hoppes out of there.. Let dry..

Next is all oiling, take a wipe with rem oil or whatever oil you use. (DONT USE TOO MUCH OIL) -Just a wipe, evenly and lightly coated with oil on it and wipe down everything you touched and cleaned with that hoppes including the inside and around the barrel, feed ramp ect.ect..

Your done!! You might already know how to clean but I just thought id write this to help you out if you didnt know and maybe get some feedback on how I clean my XD's..
Good luck and people add anything you would like..

The nylon bore brush that came with your XD is alright for a quick clean but not for a thorough cleaning.

One more thing, after im all done with cleaning the pistol and its all back together again I feel the job is completely finished until I whipe the whole pistol down with a "MossyOak" Silicone cloth.

Purchase a .45 cal "pull through" cleaner. It is a easy effective way to clean the barrel and feed ramp in about 5 seconds.

Another really good tool to clean a gun with is Q-Tips.

I noticed my XD .45 got really dirty after 100 rounds. Could be the nature of the round. The above cleaning instructions are top notch, although I clean mine every time I go to the range.

Ehhhh, I dont know about the Q tip method, unless you get actual Q tips made for cleaning firearms. There is too much lint that can come off of a regular ear Q tip..

Think about getting a Hoppes bore snake for fast and some what effective cleaning for the barrel. Alot of people like to take these to the range for after your shooting session, they are so simple to use.. Im actually in the market for one..

I meant completely, completelly fully take apart your pistol top to bottom cleaning around every month. But the instructions I gave above should be used after every time the pistol is shot, some wait after a certain amount of rounds. Its all up the person and how well you want to take care of your pistol..
