How slow can you go?

This is a discussion on How slow can you go? within the XD-45ACP Discussion Room forums, part of the XD Talk category; I'm looking to reload a very low velocity, low recoil, low noise round for my XD45. Something like a 200 gr SWC about 600 FPS ...

I'm looking to reload a very low velocity, low recoil, low noise round for my XD45. Something like a 200 gr SWC about 600 FPS or so. I will use it to shoot rabbits and other small game. How slow have you gone and maintained reliability? I'd rather not have to put a lighter spring in it, since this same pistol will reside in my nightstand with full house PD rounds.

Most autopistols need a minimum of 120 Power Factor to cycle. Your load is exactly 120 PF (600 x 200 = 120000 / 1000 = 120). There will be some trial and error and load data won't be plentiful and powder selection will be key.

I'm not sure how you came up w/ that but most guns are setup for factory equiv ammo, not a min PF. You'll find the stock spring on the XD pretty heavy, but I have had fine results going to 750fps w/ a 200gr LTC. Below that, dropping one spring rate will run the gun better.

You don't become a better shooter unless you can shoot more & you don't shoot more unlesss you can do it for less.

Fred, I got that from the technical editor of Guns & Ammo years ago. He was responsible for a good bit of testing for the .40 G&A which predated the .40 S&W. I agree with you that bunny fart loads will probably require a recoil spring of lower weight.

shooting a rabbit or other small game with a .45 ain't gonna leave much for the table . . .

But unless it's subsonic and suppressed, it's still gonna make a pretty loud bang
