Slide finish question
Hello, all, bought my XD .45 ACP a bit ago, now I want to keep the slide lookin` good, not perfect, but looking good.
This is a new gun, purchased this May, ( the fired casing say they were tested in July 6, 2006 , impossible...go figure ) , and the only thing I don`t care for , is the slide finish. What do youse guys use on the slide? Do you use an oil? Silicon cloth? Does CLP hurt or help on the slide itself? The directions on the can are kind of fuzzy on that aspect. The can says to coat the gun, and there is a cure time for max metal protection. I have used the silicon cloth, and it looks OK, but not quite the effect I want. The slide seems a little.....rough, to the touch, not as smooth as I thought it should be, is this normal? HELP !!!!!! Thnx for any replies, imout

If you mean rough as in having a bit of texture, that is OK. Rough as in machining burrs is not OK. The slide is supposedly Melonite finish with some balck oxide or another for the color. Melonite is what will keep it form rusting and you cant wear it off. The black will wear eventually. I dont do anything to the slide. When I clean I wipe the gun with a silicone reel cloth, but no oil on slide or anything like that. It is after all the piece you may have to manipulate during a failure and thel ast you need is a slick surface to grasp. Mine is a duty gun though so I am not concerned wih makin git look like a show piece.

Thank you, Zat, good info, and no, I don`t want it slippery either...lol...
as far as outer cleaning, I also use the sil cloth lately to wipe the entire gun, and it kinda makes for a bit of slippery surface, not bad though, just a little. Not wanting a show piece either, just that it seemed to me the slide could look better than it does, maybe I`m being a tad picky, I have and will continue to fire this firearm regularly, a lot, so deffinitely not for show, for shooting. And yess, it does have texture, no burrs, just rougher than I`m used to on the pistols I`ve handled. Thanks again, and any more tips concerning this would be welcome, sir.. imout

Anyhow, I think that date meant to say April 7, 2006. I just bought a XD45ACP last week and the test fire date says 30-06-2006. This one obviously means June 30, 2006. |

CLP is fine. After I clean a gun, I reassemble it, then put some CLP on a patch and coat the whole thing (or just the slide, for a polymer gun). Then, I wipe it down with an old wrag. |
