Is it OK to dry fire the XD-45acp?????

I've had some commercial dummy practice cartridges for 45acp for years, but I've always used them with my 1911s. With them there is no need to ever dry fire.....seeing as how the hammer can be manipulated with the thumb.

However, the XD series of pistols are different. Unless you leave the pistol in a cocked mode, or spring tension released on the chambered practice cartridge, it is necessary to dry fire occasionally.

Is there an official position on this from the manufacturer? OK to dry fire, or not?

I dry fire mine as much as I actually fire it. No problems so far.

I think the typical Springfield position is dryfire with impunity, but I do not speak for them. The lore on the forum is no problems with dryfire.

You do have to dryfire to remove the slide for field stripping. Some seem to be able to dryfire forever in some XDs with no problems. Some seem to have a problem with broken roll pins. Since the real life experiences are mixed I suspect that the tolerances are such that in theory the it is fine but some of the extremes have problems. The roll pin is a M3x16 metric pin that you may find at a auto parts store or a hardware store. If you can not find them locally I will send out 5 at a time for the cost of posting "WSU Cougs rule" and you send me your address. The only reason to require the post is to establish pack dominance.
Go Cougs!

Considering the fact that you MUST dry-fire to field strip it, SA cannot turn around and say that dry-firing is bad.

That said, when I'm doing a lot of dry-firing I do use snap-caps. If you have 'em, you might as well use 'em.

Springfield says it's okay to dry fire

I called them several weeks ago to ask that very question - specificallly if I needed to use snap caps to dry fire. Their answer was that snap caps were not necessary and that dry firing without snap caps would not harm the pistol.

On another forum a member reported that he broke the roll pin after several thousand dry fires like 10,000 so if you don't dry fire that much it should not be a problem. If you are going to dry fire that much, take Don up on his offer. I think I will.

I dry fire mine but to be extra safe I use a snap cap. Gun dealer should have them in stock or git them at Dillons
