OK, first FTF in my new XD-45acp today.......
I only had 50rds to shoot today, but there was one FTF on my new XD-45acp service.
This was with zinc plated steel berdan primed non-reloadable cases, Silver Bear, 230g fmj ball ammo. When I looked inside the action, the top cartridge was slipped forward about 1/4", or so. The slide was LOCKED back as if it were the last cartridge in the magazine. Nothing really seemed out of place at all, other than the slide was locked back. All I did was hit the slide stop, the slide chambered the next round and I continued to shoot as normal. All I can figure is the bullet in the cartridge next in line to be chambered somehow lifted up on the slide lock, locking the slide back prematurely. If this continues to happen, I'll take a little metal off the slide stop finger that mates with the magazine follower.......that is, unless anyone else has any good ideas. Actually, I'm not planning on shooting any more Silver Bear.....I can get CCI Blazer Brass in reloadable brass cases for only a buck more....and I do reload. I plan on getting some Wolf when I can find any.....just to try them out. Damn......I've only got 200rds through this XD45, and already a failure! I realize that's pretty good, but 100% is better! This is like getting a little ding in your new car's body......it seems pretty big when it happens, but six months down the road, it won't show like it did the day it happened! Thanks for any suggestions/comments...... hog

Wolf ammo shoots pretty good- I try to always stay away from that cheap ammo ! when someone posts a feed problem it was just about always with cheap ammo- I've put 1,000 rounds or better through my 45 -target and IDPA. I've never had a feed problem- but I always stay away from the cheap stuff.
By the way- I lived in Bozeman Mt for about a year- man is it beautiful up your way ! |

Don't get down to soon. It's a mechanical device and they are not perfect. Neither is ammo. I pulled a sneaky on my 45T the first time and loaded one round from the mag then dropped the mag. That round ejected and got caught by the slide. Think I'll try that again next time out.

Shoot quality Ammo.
Before you start changing your XD I sure would try shooting a good quality Ammo. Keep in mind the XD-45s are militery type handguns and are designed to fire 230gr FMJ Ball Ammo. meaning a quality Ammo.
When reloads and cheap Ammo. don't work it's IMHO not the XDs fault. |

I won't be changing anything unless there is a repeatable problem. As I see it, cheap ammo will cause other types of failures, but with this one, it seems to me that the only possibility is the profile of the bullet itself. If that is true, the quality of the powder, primer, etc., won't have much effect on this. The first 150rds consisted of 100rds of my RELOADS using Nosler 185g hp truncated cone, and 50rds of PMC 230g ball (PMC is pretty cheap)......no problems there. I wish I'd have saved one of the Silver Bear cartridges for comparison because I've got a sneaky feeling the cartridge dimensions that make up the profile have something to do with this. We'll see. I'll continue to shoot the XD45 without any modifications. If the problem presents itself repeatedly, I'll deal with it. I was hoping to drum up some comment from somebody here that has run into this before, or has knowledge of this sort of thing from past experience.....and what they did about it. Don't get me wrong, your speculation is welcomed, but speculation is far from comment based on experience with this particular FTF. hog

In some of the .40s this was happening and what you are thinking of worked. You can nsert a mag with the slide off and and check if it looks likely. In my .45ACP it looks to have about 1/8" clearance with Winchester ball, so unless things are moving around during recoil I wouldn't think that would be it.
But like you say, don't sweat it unless it repeats. |
