Metal shavings in Xd .45...
I just bought my first XD, the 4" .45, and went out to break it in. I used many different types of ammo and ran 250 or so rounds through it. I went home and broke it down to clean and found metal slivers and the like inside of the weapon. I noticed that the guide spring had worn at the back, and that the entire inside of the weapon had these metallic shavings in them. it am wondering if this is normal for the break-in period, or if the weapons are so badly machined that they need to "wear" to get everything smooth. Anyway this one has been puzzling me, so I just thought I had to ask.

Not normal
I am thinking that your new XD needs to take a trip back to S.A. Something is not right.

Had you disassembled the gun prior to shooting it to see if the shavings were there before hand??
Hopefully you have not cleaned it yet and will POST a PICTURE for all to see and for you to send to S.A.. |

ok, I think I figured it out. the recoil spring assembly is wearing the finish at the back of the assembly. The finish is all worn off and the metal is scratched rather badly. Now I just need to order a new part, cause I kinda want an aftermarket one, but which one do I use?

I'd ship it back to Springfield. You have a life time warenty and they will be more than happy to check it out. If you do your looking at 2 to 3 weeks before you get it back. IMHO

Send it back to S.A.
I don't think you will get them to send you a recoil spring Assy. I had asked about buying a spare unit and was told they were not selling them at this time. I highly recommend returning your XD to them and allow them to get it fixed.

I would guess that the shavings are from ammo casings. The metal of the gun is much harder than the bullets. I would still something is wrong, but better than the bullets losing metal than the gun.

I've always found little metal pieces in autos when cleaning them. Quite tiny, but there nonetheless. How big were your pieces of metal? I've always assumed it was the ammo. It seems to be worst for me with the Remington Golden Sabers, which have a lot of debris and smoke when fired. With the Sabers, I can actually see reflective metal being blown out the front of the gun when fired. I have about 600-700 rounds through my XD-45 now, and still I get little pieces of metal flake in the slide.
