I have an XD45 and a USPc .40. I like both of them...for work I carry the XD45, but I will sometimes carry the USPc, mostly because I'm not real fond of the holster I have for the XD (Galxo Matrix). I'm not a fan of "slide" type holsters, I prefer my holster to cover the gun. High Noon has one similar to the Matrix, but it covers the whole gun, so when I can afford it, I'll be ordering that, then the XD will be my all the time gun.

I have an HK USP 9mm that has never failed to feed anything so far. I've put about 1000 rounds of reloads, WWB, CCI Blazer, Gold Dot, and Winchester SXT through it. I never thought that a gun could perform like that. I had endless trouble with my XD 40 Tactical for a long time. It performs well now, hasn't misfed in ages, but it made my shooting life a hell a few years ago. All of my semi-automatic guns had problems until the HK. I still like, and shoot the hell out of, my XD, but the HK has really been a pleasant surprise.

I don't own any XD's yet, but I have a USP compact 45 that hasn't given me a bit of problems. Only 8+1 though.

H&K versus XD
I have a H&K USP in 40 S&W, and two XD's in 9mm (Service and Tactical). All three pistols have had thousands of rounds through them without a single failure. Ergonomically both models fit well in my hands, and I can shoot well with both of them.
I would say there are basically two key differences between the H&K and the SA XD: #1 - The H&K has the option of a traditional external switch type safety while the XD uses a grip safety. #2 - Price, I can get almost 2 XD's for about the cost of 1 H&K. I would feel well armed with either brand. However, now that I understand how to use the grip safety of the XD (e.g. you can disengage it to safely holster) I now prefer it over the manual switch safety of the H&K. As I heard a policeman state - "If I have to draw a handgun on someone, I don't want to have to be flipping no switches to make it work!) The second reason of the XD's lower cost helps make my wallet (and my wife) happier! More money for ammo and training! Hope that helps in your decision process. |

I've carried a H&K compact 45 for about 6 years. It's one of two 45's that I own that are 100% reliable (the other is a Les Baer). The ergonomics on it (for my hands) is perfect.

I am new to guns and only purchased one do to a situation at my home.
I am one of the types of guys who recognizes name and feel most of the time you get what you pay for so I was bent on a HK because of the Special Ops advertisement and all, and price is not an issue. On the other hand I am an engineer and we are funny about research so I dug around a little and went and rented a few guns to see what I liked. Even though I have good sized hands I did not like the feel of the HK at all and of the Glock, HK, the XD even though it was least expensive felt the best and I shot the best with it. In this case, the XD to me is better than a gun you can pay 5 times the price for comparing it to the HK Mark23. |
