Katy TX, guy looking to buy my first pistol.
Howdy! New guy here. After last hurricane season, my wife and I decided that a machete was not cutting the mustard for home defence. My only , and limited, firearms experience was with the M-16A1, but I figured that conceal carry would be a bit rough with a rifle.
So I experimented the old fashioned way by tagging along with friends to the local ranges. I found that with my unexperienced hands I had the best results/warm fuzzy feelings with .45ACP ammo, and with XD pistols but alas, they were not available as a team. Almost bought into the .45GAP, but the great lack of that ammo in local stores kept me from doing that. Finaly my XD buddy told me to take another look at the SA website, wohoo they had the 45ACP on the front!!! After a lot of lurking in this forum to learn all I could, I decided to ask my FFL guy to get me a Bitone one. After lurking even more I realized the hurricanes would be here before the Bitones did, so I'm taking the plunge with a black Tactical one. Has anyone heard good or bad about http://www.pdhsc.com/showcase1.htm? I'm curious if the shipping would bring it up in price a lot. My other alternative would be to go to Jim Pruett's gun store in my neck of the woods, he seems to have a good rep, but wants about $580. Any opinions from locals? Any advice on classes from locals? I know little except what Uncle Sam taught me in 1991 about M-16A1 rifles. Thank y'all very much in advance!!!

pdhsc is a good place to deal with and their shipping is around $30-35, if I remember. I bought mine from www.whittakerguns.com in KY and they also charged $35 for shipping, but that's about what I would have to pay in GA tax, so it was a wash, as they say. Even with shipping an my FFL fee, it was $504 OTD. My local dealer wanted $560 + 7%(this was back in Jan, prices have come down now to around $480-490), which was unacceptable.
The only other suggestion I would have is to consider the service, instead of the tactical, if you intend to do any serious concealed carry. The 4" is much better for that, IMHO. If it's just for home defense, or range plinking, then the tac would do great! And welcome to the forum!

Thanks for all the advice. I guess my only reasons for a 5" bbl, are being used to the sight radius of a rifle (bad reason I know), and reading in some magazine about about barrel length and bullet speeds in .45 ammo, and how that could affect expansion in HP bullets. That and some misguided belief that .45 ACP was designed for 5" barrels, but that could well be wrong, or not relevant nowadays. Maybe not all good reasons, but I figure that if my wife finds the Tactical too big, we would just have to buy another Xd45ACP but in service size. darn
I don't think I would conceal carry a lot thanks to my job (not allowed), but would like to have it when we go for walks in our neighborhood, travel with my wife in Texas, or when times get wild like during a hurricane. I tried Carter Country (rude), Gander (friendly but very expensive), and Jim Pruett (former radio God in Houston), but they were all considerably more expensive that what I have seen online, or what I've heard quoted around here. I find forums are a great soursce of info that you will not find in commercial websites.

You know I still don't understand why people say the Service conceals better than the Tactical. The only difference is the slide/barrel and that will go into your pants. I have a Tactical and carry it 24/7 with no problems what so ever. With a good holster and belt you can carry just about anything. The hardest part of CC is the butt of the pistol but with a 15 degree cant even that problem goes a way. I don't know I just don't get it!
