New to the XD....
I have been looking around here for a short while and have been thinking about an XD after all the excellent press I have read in various magazines. I have been into Sig Sauer's for some time now but have decided (I think) to finally take an XD-45 plunge. I just have some simple questions if someone can help me clear up: Why the XD over a Glock? Tactical or Service? I feel these are the main hang-up's at this point. If anyone can help that would be great.

Well in my humble opinion the ergo on the SA is outstanding concidering it will hold 14 rounds. The block well you know.
I have always bought full size pistols that's just me. Some people say the service is easier to hide but the grip is the hard part to conceal not the slide. The way I look at it is any pluses I get with the longer barrel are worth it to me. But it is always up to you because you are the one that will have to live with it.

Welcome to the forum, clubster. Both the XD & Glock full-size .45's are excellent guns, so it comes down to individual taste. I believe the XD is a more ergonomic design, but that is subjective. You will also save a little money on the XD's. Neither gives away anything to the other in terms of combat accuracy and reliability.
I prefer the 4" service model for an all-around "using" gun. I prefer the balance over the longer version...again subjective.

Old story, XD vs Glock, here goes:
1) XD has a fully supported chamber, Glock does not; very important if you use once fired brass, which "can" have weakend case due to swelling. 2) XD has conventional barrel rifling, Glock is polygonal; you can shoot lead ammo in XD, not recommended for Glock 3) XD has grip safety, Glock does not; may help reduce ADs 4) XD grip angle is more like 1911, Glock is... well... like Glock..

You must shoot them, I think.
I shot both the Glock 21 and the XD side by side, trying to decide which one to go with. I ended up with an XD, but you cannot go wrong either way, as they both have advantages over the other, although some of these advantages are subjective.
I presonally liked the trigger on the Glock better. I know some people say they don't like the Glock trigger period. Unless you like long pretravel and a long reset like the XD, the Glock's is better. I have no idea how the 21 doesn't produce any muzzle flip, but it doesn't. The XD's was pretty significant to me initially, but my first trip to the range proved that practice with the gun will reduce it somewhat. I shoot the XD more accuratly than the 21. I think the ergonomics of this 8th wonder of the world contributes to that. This is where my decision was made. 10 yards with this XD might as well be 10 inches, as it just "makes" me shoot very accuratly. Plus I can reach the slide release and mag release without a problem, where the 21 was awkward, probably because of its brick-like design. |

The glock is lighter and it has a lot less pre-travel in the trigger. Actually its a ton lighter. I was fiddling with a Glock 20 (full size 10mm) and it seemed lighter than my 40 subcompact.
However, I couldnt hit the broad side of a barn with the G21, at least I can hit the door on a broad side of a barn with my Tac XD 45. Also, the slide release on a G21 is very small, and I dont like it, nor do I like the fact that the mag release is only on one side. For some reason I dont use my thumb for the mag release, with the ambidextrous XD I actually use my middle finger on the other side. Cant do that with a glock. The mags on the XD are made of metal so they're much heavier than the plastic ones for the glock. And honestly, I like the factory sights on the glock better as well. After all was said and done, the selling point for me on the XD was the Lifetime Warranty. But after I shot it, I never looked back. If you decide on the XD, go with the Tactical, makes a huge difference in accuracy.

Both are OK
Nothing wrong with Glocks I have the G23 it's good to go. I like my XD-45 Service because I have a full sized 1911 also the 4" and because I carried the 4" and not the full sized 1911 I bought the XD service 4" and it's the right carry for me.

I was just passing along what others have said made a difference to them in the past to answer the question of the thread starter, clubster.
The only thing that made a difference for me was the XD grip angle, which I much prefer. I've owned many Glocks over the years, never had a complaint with any of them, just never did feel comfortable in my hands. As for the supported chamber, rifling, and grip safety, didn't even cross my mind when I bought my first XD
