Pre Travel I have defeated you!!

Just wanted to say that I took my XD to the range for the second time. What a MAJOR difference!! I didn't too too great the first time but I just put 200 more rounds thru it. It feels awsome. I didnt know what was wrong the first time around but I guess now is that i wasn't allowing for the pre travel of the trigger. Also last time I used CCI Blazer. This time i used 230 gr. winchester FMJ I got at Walmart of all places! But it was awsome. I love this gun now.

When you shoot, you should only allow the trigger to travel to the point of reset only. It takes practice and "muscle memory" to get down.
Pull the trigger as you would. After the shot, release the trigger until you feel it 'click'. That's as far as you should go. Once you are at that point, press the trigger again, repeat.

I will try that next time out. If you get a trigger job can they really take the pre travel out? If so it would be like shooting a regular semi handgun then?

Yes, with a trigger job pre-travel is non-existent.

Here's two vids I made of my XD-9 before and after the trigger job. Make sure the volume is up so you can hear it.

I removed the pre-travel on my except for about 1/8". It does help you shoot better but you still need to practice getting use to the re-set. The way I did it was to shoot slowly at the range letting the trigger travel only as much as it needs to to re-set then shoot again.

I guess it depends on the application, but shooting from the reset for the most part is bad practice. If you're in a timed competition, you're most likely not going to have the luxury of shooting from the reset, and if you're in a defensive situation you won't be shooting from reset either.

Only for the first shot. The first shot from the draw is slightly longer pul, then the rest are shot from reset position to speed followup shots. Only letting the trigger out to reset is pretty standard teaching in most defensive handgun courses.

Practice, practice, practice, practice..

Yes, it's only for shots after the first one. It's all with practice. If you shoot enough, you will get a feel for it.

With the trigger job however "point of reset" is the trigger all the way forward. Really there is no point of reset.
If you plan on keeping your trigger factory, I really suggest you learn to shoot from reset. It helps out with accuracy as you are not pulling on the trigger to take up slack. Defensive shootings can work the same way. If you are so used to doing it, it should be second nature and not something you even think about. My 3 cents.
