My new XD 45 ACP Tactical

I've been pretty busy the last few months with my collection of military surplus rifles (M1 Garand, M1 USGI Carbine, Enfield No4 MK1 and my "new" 1903 Springfield). Just on a whim, I decided to check out the XD Talk Forum (I have an XD 9SC, and XD40, and an XD9 Tactical). My GOSH a high capacity .45 ACP which fits in the hand just like my XD9/XD 40....I had eschewed the .45 GAP (sorry, GAP affectionados, I just don't have the "need" for a GAP in my life).

I left to go to work 45 minutes early today (afternoon shift) and went to my favorite dealer. They had a .45 ACP Service in the display case but no .45 ACP Tacticals on display (but they did have a GAP Tactical). I tried out the .45 ACP Service, and marveled how it fit perfectly in my hand just like my other XDs. When I inquired about the .45 Tactical; the clerk checked the computer and it came up with 3 in stock!

Well, I bought it on the spot after it was retrieved from the basement safe (I had a very nice Tax Refund this year). The price was $489 which comes with a neat "kit" with 2 high cap mags, a mag loader, belt mag pouch, and belt mini Kaydex type holster. The ACP Service was I think $30 less. I noticed the XD SC was $420 (remember when the SCs were hard to find, and they were going for $500?). I suspect when these .45 Tacticals become more available, the price will drop. I think I paid $435 for my XD9 Tactical....

I felt a bit uneasy, hiding it inthe trunk of my car as I hurried off to work. What if my car got broken into? The Range was closed when I got off this evening, but I took time tonight to clean the barrel and to dry fire a few dozen times (I put a snap cap in the chamber as I recall some recent concerns bout dry firing the XD). The trigger pull is not as clean as my other well worn XDs and it broke at 6.5 pounds (better than my XD9 Tactical which I ended up sending to Canyon Creek; THAT had a trigger pull close to 8 pounds).

I loaded up a hundred rounds of 230 gr Rainiers over 4 gr of Clays and will get to the range in the morning. I haven't been as excited about a gun since my first XD I bought several years ago. I canhardly wait!

If you enjoy yours half as much as I enjoy mine you will have a great time. Good shooting!

Well, I got back from the range today. 100 rounds and no malfunctions. Initially, I fired from the rest at 50 feet. I loaded 230 gr Rainiers and 230gr Speer Lead Swagged bullets. These seem to be accurate in my 1911 and my Sig 220.

My first bench rest grouping measured just over one inch center to center, this is a five shot group, with one flyier. With the flyer; the shot group would be 2 inches. This is with the copper washed Rainiers. With the swagged lead, the groups opned up to about 2 inches.

The sight regulation was only "fair" the groups at rest were to the left of the POA by about 2 inches. I believe the newer XDs have more problems in ths regard. There was a time 2 or 3 years go, that XDs came with a factory test target. I think the factory in Croatia is too busy and I fear QA has slacked. When you look at my gun, the front sight is perfectly centered between the witness marks, the rear sight is to the left; which would explain the left sided grouping. 90% of the XDs, if the front and rear sights are centered, will in fact shoot centered.

The POI otherwise is the POA; this is not typical for my other XDs which are sighted best with the 6 O'clock target hold.

I am going to drift the rear sight to the right and vary the ammo.

My off hand groups were typically 6 inches; that's fairly good for me (3 inches with a .22; 4 inches "best" with centerfires). I think if the trigger was lighter, and the windage were sopt on, I should be able to do as well as with my XD9 Tactical.

I guess if the sights were spot on and the trigger was say, 4 pounds; I would be overjoyed. I am OK with the gun, perhaps a tad bit anti climaxed. I might send this to Rich at Canyon Creek as I did with my XD9 Tactical -which has an incredible trigger pull- (3.5 pounds).

Mine shoots just as poorly. Can't figure it out...

I must have gotten lucky with mine...when I fired my work qualification (ranges from 4 yards to 8 yards to 18 yards) I put all rounds from 4 and 8 yards into one hole. At 18 yards the group opened to about 4", but I attribute that to my aging eyes. But, to be fair, I shot it a lot before I tried qualifying, and I got better as I shot, so I'd have to say, keep shooting!
