No such thing as stupid questions, right?

That phrase probably doesn't apply to this one. I am new to shooting and firearms, so please bare with me on my ignorant questions. Seems how I am pursuing a career in LE, I am trying to learn everything I possibly can about firearms, ballistics, etc. Something that is so foreign to me. Anyhow, a while back I decided to get my first handgun and fell into the GAP fad. I know I know, ignorant. With that said, I now have a question about the .45 ACP pistol. Is this round/ handgun a fad as well? I am looking into maybe purchasing one to replace the GAP. But, if my little knowledge serves me right, the ACP round has been around for a long time, correct? So, why all the hype about the SA-XD45ACP? Is it because of the amount of rounds the magazine holds? I am not trying to sound like an asshole, and I am not bashing. I am just trying to figure out whether this is a fad, or a thing to stay. Again, please excuse my ignorance and I appreciate your guys'/gals' help in advance...thank you.

This is strictly my opinion. The .45ACP has been around for almost 100 years and it's not going anywhere. The .45GAP may stay or go..I have no idea. There's nothing wrong with a GAP.

All the "hype" as you call it, regarding the XD45ACP, is that it does hold 13+1 and it's not a huge pistol. The Glock 21 which is .45ACP also, has a very thick grip to accomodate the .45ACP round and the grip it too thick even for my large hands.

I've always wanted a non-1911 pistol in .45ACP and the XD45 fits me perfectly. It's has a great grip, it's not heavy like a steel pistol, and it's very accurate for a lousy shooter like me. This all adds up to winner in my book.

This isn't Glocktalk, you can ask questions here, and usually no one will hand you your head.

.45 ACP is the king of pistol cartridges, but until now you had a choice of a single stack 7-8 round capacity or a very large grip to accomodate a large double stack magazine, like the Glock 21. The excitement over the XD is because they managed to minimize the grip size, and because the XD is one of those guns that just excites shooters. It is a good design, has a lot of good features, and the grip is an excellent shape for many shooters. The value for the money is also excellent, which doesn't hurt.

Welcome to the forum.

The hype over the XD45ACP is that it finally marries the best handgun cartridge on the planet with the best handgun on the planet. Don't get me wrong, I love the 1911. It is, and always will be, among the greatest fighting pistols. But I'd reach for the XD45 over the 1911 in most situations.

The 45 acp has been around for over a century now, and it's track record is quite good. The US military is currently looking for a new pistol for it troops and has put the JCP (Joint Combat Pistol) program into motion. One of the notable requirements the military has placed on this program is that the pistol MUST be chambered for the 45 acp. This means the military is going to be switching BACK to the 45 acp as their caliber of choice for pistols. The 45 acp also has very loyal user groups in the private sectors. Two calibers you can count on being around for a long time are the 45 acp and the 9 mm (they are also the ying & yang of the pistol calibers).

A pistol that hold 13 rounds of 45 acp is nothing new, they have been around for 2 decades now. Glock, Para-Ordinace, STI, and others have been making them all that time.

The Glock used to be the only pistol that offered light weight, low cost, high reliability, & high capacity. Now there are several companies doing their best to get a piece of the action. The XD's grip is deliberatly tailored to work for the hands that the Glock doesn't fit well. It is also usually priced under the Glock. In doing this the XD became a very strong player on the low cost polymer pistol field. The XD45acp also has addressed a long standing problem area of the XD line. Poor quality finishes on the steel parts leading to rust if not maintained properly. All XD's in 45 acp have a different (and I strongly feel it is much better) finish than any other pistol in the XD line.

All in all, the hipe of the XD45acp is that a pistol with strong following is now available in a caliber with a strong following. Nothing really "NEW" has happend. But something very nice has.

I would really like to know.
1) Gun platforms that allow higher capacity, not single stack. (modified .45ACP pistols)
2) GAP ammo availiable at EVERY gunshop/Walmart
3) Complete Outlaw of ALL .45ACP ammo, dies, cases, magazines, and pistols.

When all three happen, the G.A.P. will move.
