Cleaning your gun quesion

I'm a newbi when it comes to anything to do about guns. Do you guys clean your guns after every trip to the range. Does it depend on how many rounds you shoot, for instance would you clean the gun afterwards if you only shot 20 rounds? Would you clean it if you were going to shoot again the next day?

I shot about about 150-200 rounds through my XD yesterday. When I got home I broke it down and did a very good cleaning, I was planing on going to the range again today but not knowing if it was a bad idea to not clean it I went ahead and just did it. It was fairly dirty after shooting that many rounds through it. What say you?

I clean after each time I shoot. Period. A clean pistol is a happy pistol.

some will tell you to clean it every time, and some will tell you they only clean when the gun starts having problems, and the rest will tell you anything in between...grandpa always told me to clean after every time shooting so that you know the gun is ready to go when you grab it, and it's oiled and wiped down for storage otherwise. that said, if i'm going shooting in the near future, i probably won't clean the gun right away...

Just out of practice and habit...I clean em after every trip to the range.

It's relaxing for me to fondle my guns even if it's to clean them up, etc. ...not to mention what has already been posted about them being ready if you ever need them.

I think it depends.

If I just shoot a couple of magazines, I don't necessarily feel it I have to clean it. But if I shoot 50 or more, I would recommend a cleaning.

I also clean mine if I only shoot a few rounds; and it will be a few weeks before I shoot again. (Dirt and particulate matter can harm your firearm if left alone and not cleaned.)

I usually clean mine after every range trip, sometimes I don't have time and will leave it as is for a few weeks or until I go to the range again.

I clean it after every trip to the range. Unless I'm going shooting with it again within a week. This thing is designed to take a beating and it will not hurt it if you don't clean it after every trip. If you're not shooting for another couple weeks I would.

As for the round count, it varies on how deep you need to clean it. Clean it to the guidelines mentioned above, but if you only shoot 20 rounds it's not going to need as much of a cleaning if you shoot 500. BTW, who goes to the range and only shoots 20 rounds?

I don't think its going to affect anything or hurt reliabilty to not clean it after every use. Obviously its better for your peace of mind if you do. After reading the XD 20,000 round torture test article and seeing that the author dragged his XD through the mud and shot 100 rounds like that with no FTF or FTE, I think it would take a very very very large amount of residue to mess up an XD.

That being said, I still try to clean it after every use
