Duty, Tac, or 1911?
Great informative board you have here. Ive been lurking a few weeks now gaining info and am about ready to purchase another 45. If I may, I would like some input please......
My preferred method of carry is IWB. I have a very comfortable rig for it. For duty, I carry an H&K USP .40 full size. OFF Duty I much prefer the 5 inch 1911. For simplicity sake, I am thinking of switching to the XD since it is DAO and therefore a similar platform to my primary duty carry. The higher mag capacity is also appealing. I have been toying with the idea of an XD 45 Tac. The weapon will be set up for combat only. I have no need to punch bullseyes, but if that is a by product so be it. Again, I am used to carrying a 5 inch 1911 IWB and have no problems at all with concealment or comfort. I guess I am really seeking input from fellow 1911 shooters who have switched to the XD platform, and their preference over the 4 inch duty, the 5 inch Tac, or something like a 5 inch Kimber Tactical. Money in this case is not an issue. Thanks in advance..... |

Jcobb, I've always preferred full-sized autos such as the 1911, 92FS, and 220 ST. I find that I prefer the XD's in tactical largely because of the longer barrel and slide. I've got three tacs (45 gap, 45 acp, and 9 mm) and I shoot them all better than the xd-9 service, which I carry IWB. Those used to smaller 1911's might feel otherwise. I might add that the 45 acp and the xd platform seem to go together very well - they were made for each other!
Good shooting, whatever you choose! |

Thanks for the response. Do you consider the XD 45 Tac too bulky for IWB?

Just thought I'd add my 2cents. I have the XD45ACP service, it replaced my SA Lwt Champion 1911. I can shoot the XD almost as well as the 1911 up to 15yds. I have the XD9 Tac as well, and it's just not comfortable for me to carry, due to the extra slide length (IWB, 3:30 position). I don't really see the benefit for carrying the Tac, as I can shoot the service almost as well at close-in personal defense distances (less than 10yds). So I'd choose the service XD45ACP, but that's just me!

I have been carrying my XD45 Service most of the time lately instead of the full-size 1911 that I used to carry. The XD is certainly thicker than the 1911, but the extra inch of barrel on the 1911 makes it a little less comfortable to carry IWB when I sit down. The XD Service seems to be just as accurate as my full size 1911, either of them are more than accurate enough for defensive purposes. Having the 14 rounds with the XD is also nice, even if I wouldn't likely need that many rounds, better safe than sorry. I also have a Kel-Tec .380 in my pocket at all times as a BUG or as a primary when I can't conceal the bigger pistols well enough.

Thank you all for the responses. .45shooter, that is exactly what I was looking for. I am also going to purchase a keltec as a BUG. Still trying to decide whether or not I want the .380 or the 9mm though.

FYI, the XD is NOT DAO. It is in fact a single action striker fired pistol. When you rack the slide, the striker is completely cocked, making it a SAO.

Well, thanks for clearing that up. Poor choice of terminology on my part. What I SHOULD have said was that I wanted to stick with the same platform of NOT having a manual thumb safety. Again, I apologize for the poor terminology on my part.
