XD 45 doesn't like hollow points? UPDATE!
Hi Guys,
I've had an XD 45 Service model for about two years now. Up until this point, I've only used it as a range gun with 230 grain FMJ and lead reloads. Total round count is probably only 750 rounds. No malfunctions of any type during this time period. I recently decided that I would like to add the XD to my carry rotation and started testing it with some hollow points. First I tried Federal Hydra-Shock 230Grain rounds. With slow fire I get occasional jams with this round. As soon as I do any rapid fire, or even a double tap, I get almost always experience a malfunction. (Failure to feed). What happens is that when the new round is stripped from the magazine, the tip of the bullet slams into the hood of the barrel/chamber. Hope that makes sense. I'll try to get a picture the next time it happens. I also tried some basic Remington 230Grain JHP rounds with the same results. Has anyone else here had trouble with shooting hollow point ammo reliability in the XD45? Is there a specific self defense round that is known to work well in these guns? Thanks for any tips/suggestions !! James Last edited by pctech; 11-03-2009 at 12:53 PM. Reason: UPDATE |

I have had good luck with Corbon Powerballs in my XD 45, but I have also put a lot of Gold Dots, Hydroshocks, and Winchester Self Defense ammo through it without a hitch. I may have had one fail to feed in the last 500 rounds, I can't remember for sure. Have you tried polishing the ramp?

I agree about the ramp polishing for starters.
I've had several pistols over the years that had trouble with hollow points until the ramp got polished and the chamber throated. Relatively inexpensive. |

don't have an xd45, but I've watched the xd45 forum for awhile.....I'll stick with my p220.
if your having feed problems your in the same boat as the 1911 guys, they may tell you they feed hp but I spend a lot of time with a gunsmith, he sure makes a good living repairing those things and getting them to work. try polishing your feed ramp, if that doesn't work then try Corbon's Powr'ball (I think I spelled that right) basicly it's a HP with a plastic ball in the hp that solves the feed problems and keeps the HP from clogging so it helps to provide reliable expansion, I think they came up with it for the 1911 crowd. |

Me too. I have two XD45 Compacts and both have eaten JHPs from Federal, GD, Hornady, Winchester, etc and Hydras in 230 down to 165 without feeding issues. My carry round is the 230gr Hydra.
