Got to shoot my new 45 ACP Tactical today..
It's really cold here in Idaho, so I quickly abandoned hopes of good groups and had fun rapid firing instead. I've got xd tacticals in 45 GAP and 9 mm, and this one did not feel any bigger. Recoil was very pleasant - characteristic push of the 45 acp, vs snap of the GAP. It dined happily on WWB and then wolfed down some really awful gunshow reloads that I bought in a moment of madness. I'm used to shooting full-sized 1911's and my SIG 220 ST, so I appreciated the balance afforded by the 5" tactical. Spent cases were ejected very consistently. The few groups I got before I began to lose feeling in my fingers indicated that the sights are well-aligned. If I could change anything, I'd like a lighter trigger pull, but this one is crisp enough to be forgiven for it's heaviness.
I had a bit of trouble loading the 13 round mags to full capacity - the cold weather did not help. I made it a point of honor not to resort to the mag loader supplied with the tac, but it no doubt would have helped. The gun show reloads were a mess, but the tac cleans up very well - wide slide grooves, etc. Pipe cleaners are good for cleaning between the extractor and the slide body, and q-tips work nicely for the slide grooves. Take care not to scratch the finish with the ends of the pipe cleaners. This tactical will certainly join the shooting rotation with my other 45's. I'm anxious to try some of my reloads and get some really good groups with it, as soon as the weather warms here. I've been able to get 2 1/4 inch groups at 25 yards with my xd-9 tac from a modified weaver stance, and I have a feeling that this one will break the elusive sub-2 inch barrier. Even though I carry the service, I prefer the XD tacticals because I like shooting full-sized handguns. Based upon my experience, I'd reccommend the XD 45 acp tac to anyone who enjoys shooting 45's, especially those who are used to full-sized 1911's and SIGS. Now..perhaps it's time to consider an xd tac in .40...?? Rotnguns |
