Since this thread is full of confusing advice, I though I would add to it, in my training, also run by a LEO, he advises to never say the word SHOOT, and only give directions that you want the intruder to follow, "like don't move", or "get out of my house now", "I have called the cops", "drop the weapon". The last one is the favorite, it establishes that he BG had a weapon and you were in fear for your life. His justification is if there are any witnesses, and BG can be witnesses, all they will remember is you saying "I'll Shoot", or "Don't make me shoot" and not the "don't move" or "get out of the house" part, so in court you will look predisposed to wanting to "shoot" We did an interesting drill that was force on force with airsoft guns, and it is amazing how under stress your recollection of what happened will be totally wrong. We did this in a way where each of us had not seen the scenario before we did it but could watch others go through it after we had done it. There was an amazing disparity between what the person in the scenario thought happened and what really happened. So you can not expect witnesses to remember what you said correctly, but odds are the will remember you said SHOOT, if you do shoot...... oh and as for Shotgun or XD, fight the way you train, if you train more with the XD, grab the XD, if you triain more with the shotgun, grab it, for me it will be my XD and the wife her Sig P239. Few other things, have a grab bag next to the gun with the things you will need, phone, flashlight, extra mags, etc....and consider having electronic earmuffs as well, the prevent you from suffering the shock of the bang, and they can amplify the sounds in the house so your hearing is better than the BG. This makes a lot of sense to me. Even watching the TV show "Cops", what the officers describe happening in a scuffle often does not match what I just watched.

Metric a$$load of advice here, on tactics, training, weapon choices, etc.
I'll keep mine simple. Get a dog. Seriously. Dogs are the best alert system I've ever owned. They'll probably be able to smell an intruder before your alarm system will trip. Dog barks are a deterrent in itself. And the 15-30 second advantage your dog may afford you is a LOT more time you're gonna get with just about any other scenario. Far too often, time is the critical factor.

My gal and I sat down with the kids one evening and went over a HD plan with our kids. I tool the NRA HD course so that helped with some insight on a few things. It sure never hurts to have a plan together just in case.
