Thanks for all the responses...
To clarify a few things... we have a one story, the wife prefers the Mossberg, I perfer the XD (Alpha, I agree, wasnt sure how a baby and shotgun would work). The threat is ... who know... were not in a bad area, but then again who knows... We just want to be on the same page with a plan that we are both comfortable with. If they come in via the garage, they will meet a steady stream of .45, I have a clear view to the double locked garage door with a dog inbetween. I dont mind being on the phone the whole time, there will be plenty of commands from me "to get out, I'm armed". Quote:
good stuff, thanks to all... looking forward to reading what other have to write.

-I've got a similar situation here in my home. Layout wise, what do you do about the little one in his room down the hall?
-I'm in agreement w/ theg33k, (plus your layout sounds kind of like mine)... Seems to me the best thing would be to stand your ground from the doorway of the MB and fight off any advance from there until police arrive. That way the BG would have to go through you to get any further into your home and closer to your family. -By the way, how do you like that Mossberg? I'm looking at getting one of those or a remington 870 set up for tactical/HD use.

It looks like you have a solid plan.
I have only one suggestion : Don't split up your family. It is too easy for her to mistake you for an intruder or vice versa. Get the wife trained, train with each other regularly and if you decide to move have her follow you and watch your back. Two are almost ALWAYS safer than one. My wife is my backup, she's a MEAN shot with her Colt 1911, understands the basics of cover and concealment and I would trust her with my back over anyone but my dad or my brother. I know if she thought we were in danger she'd kill the son of a ***** as fast (or faster) than I would. If you have the ability to stay put you should both do so, in the same room. Know your direction of fire and what will be beyond and to the sides of you. Make sure that neither of you ever cross within a 65 degree angle (either side) of the other's direction of fire. I disagree with the individual who says "hang up" after calling 911. Make sure that the operator records you giving LOUD, CLEAR verbal commands to STOP and DROP THE WEAPON before firing.

Good Plan
Sounds like a good plan. I would bring the wife with me to get the baby though. That way all you have to worry about it is "Terminating" the threat. The wife can take care of the baby while you blast the BG. Give the wife the shotgun and you can get yourself an AR15 with the XD holstered in your waist. LOL. No such thing as Too prepared. . . Hehe. Just my 2 cents. Good Luck with your plan.

If your babys room is the very next room to yours, is it easy access through the wall? It would be very noisy to break through the sheet rock, but it could be another option to get your baby and retreat back to your room for a stand. This may be excessive, but staying hidden and out of harms way is optimal. Bash me if you think it is overkill, but just a thought.

something i struggle with is do i call the cops at all? or do i handle it and then call?
inexperienced cops scare me, and so do untrained cops. not say that ALL fall into this category, but its kinda hard to know which one will show up at my home on the night i need them, or do i need them? i have a plan also, but the OP makes it sound like there is going to be a 10 minute gun battle happening. in reality it will most likely be over quick, if it even happens, you may just scare them off and there may be no face to face encounter at all.

Your thoroughly thought out plan is to be commended. There are only two people who need to be happy with it, you and your wife. But I urge you to consider this:
Your plan assumes that everything will go according to the plan. As the old military saying goes: No battle plan ever survived first contact with the enemy. If you are woken by strange noises in your house, you will be bleary, pissed, and most of all, scared ****less. You will not be dressed, a tremendous psychological disadvantage. You will at some point also have to deal with the adrenaline surge that will cloud your judgment and dull your senses. After a homicide, however justified it may be, the police will conduct a thorough investigation. Every move by every person in the house will be scrutinized in the smallest detail. That being the case, why would you want 911 tapes to be available for investigators and prosecutors to second guess everything they hear? All an anti-gun jury needs to hear is “Couldn’t you have warned him just one more time?” These are the last sorts of questions you will want to answer and the last sort of things your attorney will want to have to deal with. A 911 tape is no different than talking to police without an attorney, and you wouldn’t do that would you? If you call 911, tell them of an armed confrontation at your address, then hang up, the first responders will still get to you ASAP. If the shooting was justified, that will soon be apparent. If not, the tapes cannot help you. My sincere hope is that nobody who reads this has to deal with this type of situation. Take care. Just my .02

I say you move back to the room with your wife. Your little one sounds safest in the master bathroom. I don't know if the 'spray' of the 500 is as wide as you believe it is. I'm not sure I disengage the alarm or not. It could distort the BG's senses and give yourself the advantage. It would also make your house easier to find for the police. If possible, do some training exercises with the alarm going off and see how this affects your plan. I don't even want to address the last question as I hate to imagine being in a gun fight with one of my little ones in my arms. If it comes down to this, I'd rather have the kid in a closet until things are sorted out.
