XD .45acp Barrel

Has anyone else noticed how thin that barrel is? I have never seen another .45 with a barrel that thin. It made me think that if there was going to be an issue, it will be with the barrel.

It's pretty thin but it is more about the quality of the steel than how thick it is. I have seen some 1911 barrels that aren't much thicker if any.
45ACP even in +P is really not that high on pressure. If you get a chance, look at a Ruger Super Redhawk in 480. Notice how little steel there is between the chambers.

45ACP maxes out around 20,000 PSI

The 480 is up near 50,000 PSI

From a muzzle view it appears to have about half the thickness of a 1911 barrel.

Even the thickest of barrels will blow up if you fire on top of a squib. Think positive....less schrapnel if you do KB.

Thin Barrel

Yes it is quite thin. I briefly visually compared it to a Ruger P90 barrel.

I figured that they know what they are doing. Different materials, etc. Actually the barrel of the XD 45 is visually the same as my GLOCK 36.

So these new alloys, etc must be better able to withstand pressure than plain old stainless.
