First Gun - Should I get the XD 45ACP?
I just went to the range with an experienced shooter a couple days ago, and I shot numerous guns, including the XD9 and XD40. I also shot a ruger 22, sw revolver and a 1911 (.45). Anyways I'm looking to get a gun for home and carry.
I shot the 9,40, and 45 and they feel about the same to me recoilwise. Now I've realized that bullets for the 45 are twice as much as the 9mm. $.20 a bullet! versus $.10 for a 9mm. I want to get the 45 anyways for power, and then practice with it. Am I making the right decision? I guess I could get the 9mm later on huh?

As far as the "right" decision, only you will be able to decide after taking the plunge. That said, I don't think you are making the wrong decision! As you stated, you can buy a 9mm later. You will enjoy the XD ACP. These things have a tendency to multiply anyways.

Long....
my friend is in a similar situation. I've taken him shooting with me many times over the last couple months and he's committed to purchasing a handgun for himself after he gets his next paycheck. He's shot my xd40, my USPc .40, my glock 19 9mm, and a mil-spec .45. He's in love with the idea of getting the big n powerful .45. HOwever, he has a pretty bad case of anticipation and i'm pretty sure starting off with something that packs as much punch will only make this worse before it gets any better. So he's debating whether to be conservative and get a 9 or take a chance on the .45. The delay on the xd.45 here in California is buying him some time to think about it. Guns under consideration: -Glock 17 -Glock 19 -XD-9 Service Bi-tone -XD-45ACP Service bi-tone What other guns if any are you considering?

Another benefit of the .22 is that ammo is so inexpensive that there is no reason not to practice, practice, practice. And the low recoil will help ingrain good shooting habits.

After posting that, I do have to admit that my first pistol was my .45. But I did grow up shooting my Dad's .22 Ruger.

I want a Springfield XD for sure. Remember guys this is for defense. I don't know if a 22 as my only pistol would do the job, if a couple of thugs came after me. It's a great gun though and I will get one in the future for practice.
It would also like to add that I shot 38 specials and a few 357 magnums.

Basically the recoil of the pistols felt about the same, except for the 22.
I'm not saying I was shooting perfect bullseyes, but I could hit the paper with any caliber gun from 3 yards as a newbie.

I'd get an XD-9 or 40 to start yourself off. The only reason I think so is because I don't think there's a reason to pay the outrageous prices for the "NEW XD45ACP bwahaha!!!!!!!!!" It's like spending more for the XBOX-360 just because it was a new thing. I also feel like it's contributing to gun store owners that mark things up just because they feel like they can.
You can perfect your skills and such with your XD-9/40 and still use it as a home defense/personal carry gun, which you can't really do with a .22 pistol. I just wouldn't buy the 45acp until the prices evened out a little.
