I am an instructor in training at Firearms Academy of Seattle.
The owner there says he doesn't allow instructors with any weaknesses, so I re-took the classes with a revolver-only and also with a semi left-handed. Now I shoot IDPA either with a revolver or left-handed-semi and for the next year I'm shooting only revolver. We get a lot of students shooting revolver these days, brand-new gun owners, and enough lefties and cross-eye dominant shooters that I must be fully competent in everything. Now, I find I really enjoy shooting revolvers, a good one has some characteristics that semis don't and it has honed my precision because I only have 6 shots. In the summer I carry a 5-shot snubby in a Smartcarry holster, very comfortable. So, why do you limit yourself to strong-side semis only?

I used to count my shots, until I realized that it was only distracting me from my target. I stopped counting and it helped. I can only imagine in an actual shooting situation, there would be NO WAY you would be able to count.

Shot counting went out of favor over 20 years ago in my department.
I have read/heard/watched some instructors, both LEO and non-LEO recommend a white or red tracer as the next to the last round in each magazine. That way when you see the tracer fire you know the last live round is in the tube. Thoughts??? |

And it's also no secret that tracers are good for starting fires. I'd hate to be the unlucky SOB who started a house fire on some off chance after unloading into a bad guy. I also have no idea how long it takes for a tracer to be visible in a handgun cartridge. With 5.56 it's an EASY 50 yards minimum before it lights up.
