I have 2 and a half sets of measurements and access to another XD45 I have not measured yet because I don't have my hands on it yet. It sure would be nice to get at least one or two more sets of measurements to add to the spreadsheet. Hint! Hint!

Occam's Razor may apply here. The simplist solution is the probably the correct one.

Something was mentioned about the loaded cartridge indicator, so I took my Tactical down and investigated.

On mine, at least, the slot milled in the barrel hood, does NOT go as deep as the rest of the chamber mouth, leaving a sharp lip. Pull your barrel and insert your thumbnail under the hood, sliding forward, and you can feel it catch the ledge. Now try a loaded cartridge as well (ONLY IN A STRIPPED BARREL!!!) Now imagine a loaded cartridge slamming into that ledge with great force. This may very well be what the cartridge is slamming into and damaging it.

I've had no trouble with mine, but the lip is definately there. Posibly, due to variations in machining, some are prominent enough to cause this damage. Perhaps lightly radiusing that edge, to break it, may cure all the ills noted.

Keep in mind that this is simply the opinion of an Armchair Commando, and I am simply basing this opinion on the pictures showing the location and type of damage.

The lip fits, as the instrument of that destruction

Sorry stupid question, what about the height of the magazine in relation to the barrel? It seems like you would get more variation there, or maybe deformation of the magazine lips? are there base extensions on the magazines changing the seating depth?

It would be awesome if CharlieXray could film his XD with a super high speed camera (like they use on "Time Warp") so it would be possible to see exactly what happens.

Mine has the same sharp point but I believe it is causing the mark out near the nose of the bullet I pointed out in one of my pics. It is worth a shot though to file it off and run another test just in case. Thanks for bringing that to my attention again.

Thumper suggested this also and sent a set of measurements from his, which I compared against mine and found little variation, at least not enough to go "Ah-ha!". The loaded magazine in an in-battery pistol has the top round pushed down into the magazine somewhat. The round is supposed to pop up into feeding position once the breech face clears it. But some rounds go down and not up!

I am strongly suspecting stacking of off machining that brings the barrel lower in some pistols than others.

I posted this on two other forums and am getting a few more measurements. We may have some kind of a conclusion soon (and then maybe not).

It may be doing both.

The cartridge feeds under the hood at an angle first, then goes horizontal as it slides up the breechface, under the extractor. Initial strike by the ledge with the nose, then down the ogive of the bullet until the second strike near the casemouth, as the cartridge gets horizontal.

Shouldn't require much, just a light radius to break the sharp edge. Let us know how it comes out.

could it be that the front of the round is hanging up on the front of the mag, and the back of the round is bulged allowing the back end of the round to pop up?
