I bought a Ruger P something in the 80's for the high capacity 9mm. I put one box through it and sold it at the next gun show before I received the credit card bill for it. It may be a good gun for some, but it felt like I was holding a shoebox.
I picked up an XD45 at a gun show a few months ago and was amazed that it was a double stack .45. Although a bit fatter in the grip than a 1911, I was very pleasantly surprised at the comfort level and the natural point of aim. (Much like the ergonomics of the 1911 to me.) I thought about it a lot after that gun show. At the next gun show I found an XD45 with the thumb safety for $500. It still felt as good as I remembered and after checking the prices of other dealers I went back and put my money down without even trying for a better deal. That was the best price at that show and no one else had the Service model with the thumb safety. I'm an old 1911 guy and I like the thumb safety. It's second nature to thumb it off when drawing, and I like that my instincts and training will be the same as my 1911's. A friend is teaching me some defensive shooting techniques and I now enjoy shooting the XD even more than the 1911. Now my only problem is that I want to go shoot a couple of times a month and burn through 300 rounds per trip. If ammunition supplies and prices could get back to where they were 2 years ago I would be a happy camper. GB7 |

I already had 2 Springfield 1911's and I wanted a stock pistol for competition.
I shot an XD45 of a friend and went out and bought one. 1. it's a 45 2. it's a Springfield 3. 13 rounds of 45 4. Repeat infinitely I also bought .40 just because. Then another XD45. Man these things are addictive. I am considering selling my AR to buy more.

I obtained my XD45 along with several other goodies as partial trade for my bike. I'd read several articles about them and thought I'd give it a try and sell it if it wasn't for me. I still have it. One of the most accurate plastic guns I have shot.

I picked it because it fit my hand like a glove. All the features were good to me.

Lots of reasons. First, a couple decades as a police officer. About 7 of those as a forensics officer where I attended all violent crimes and autopsies. I won't carry anything less than a 45. Second, personal experience has shown me that I need a pistol that points like my finger. Glocks don't do this for me. I also require a stainless slide and night sights, although in truth, during a deadly encounter, I'll take pointability over any sight. Meaning, if pressed, I'd take the sites completely off the gun if it naturally points well for me, if I had to choose between the two, which I don't.
During all those years, I attended advanced tactical (swat) schools and the city even paid me to compete back in the 80's, all with a pistol with a 4" barrel, so I feel comfortable using one now. Besides, I don't believe I'll be engaging targets farther than 15 steps or so with my sidearm. I'll use a rifle after that. (Old Army saying, your handgun should be used to fight your way over to your rifle) I do practice occasionally out to 50 with my XD. The XD has been reliable so far and is my first choice for defense. |

Although I'm not as convinced that .45 is the only way to go. I'm in the "as long as it starts with 4" crowd. I will say this though: any shot to the CNS--even a .22--will get the job done; there are no magic bullets. I totally agree with you on the pointability of the weapon though. The XD and the XDM both do that for me.

I am simply a XD fanatic!! It all started with my XD 9mm sub.
Ultimate reasons: 1. 45ACP 2. It's a Springfield Armory 3. 10 or 13 rounds of .45ACP 4. Lifetime Warranty I also bought the XD(M).40 just for the hell of it. Man...... these things are very addictive. I am considering buying one more, an XD.40 Sub. XD...Excellent choice!!!

I liked the concept of a light high capacity .45 ACP. I like the .45 for knock down. I also liked the idea of a rear "nipple" and raised portion on the slide to avoid having to do a "press check", which is handy in low light or darkness. I also liked the ability to make 13 round magazines into 16 round magazines.
