My wife was on my case that I buy guns and don't shoot that much. So I said ok, I will buy one just to carry around the ranch and shoot daily or weekly. So I bought a XD9SC, well I fell in love with the way it felt and the way it shoots, highly accurate even from 25 - 30 yards. Well I owned a Taurus PT145, I liked it, it was accurate and a good truck gun for me. I'm smalled framed and have a hard time concealing medium to large frame handguns. But after shooting a the XD9SC I knew I had to sell the Taurus .45 and get another SA-XD, so I chose the XD45 Compact 4". Its the gun I shoot the least, but its the gun I shoot the best with. There are no misses with either of my XD's.

I have been shooting the .45 ACP since the 1950s as a kid so I know what I am doing with one. I have owned and shot custom Colt 1911s, a Glock 21, and now a Springfield XD .45 Service. My favorite is my XD .45 Service due to its balance, feel, and reliability. I have fired hundreds of rounds without one malfunction and it fits my hand perfectly. It points naturally and is very accurate. It was my choice for my CCW. What more can I ask of it?

I simply have never liked the way Glocks feel in my hand, the way they point, and the positioning of their magazine release buttons. Not to mention that it is highly inadvisable to reload if you own a Glock.

The Smith & Wesson M&P has had quality control problems from the start, and a guy I know who ran one of the stages at last year's IDPA state championship, told me that more M&P's malfunctioned than all the other major brands combined.

So that left the XD, which I'm very pleased with. No complaints, though I recommend getting a good trigger job done by the XD factory. The XD trigger isn't bad, but like most production handguns from most makers, it could use some fine-tuning.

I have shot nothing but reloads,my own, in all my glocks for 15 years!

Like all gun manufactures they say not to use reloads because they have no control over how the reloading is done.

Glocks are no different then any other pistol, good, careful reloads are just as good as factory, in some cases better!

I picked it up at the store and it just fit my hand - my father in law is a Glock guy and I just can't grip the Bricks..I mean Glocks well. The grip is to thick for it to sit in my hand comfortably.

Then I rented it to try it out at the range and and after about 50-60 rounds to get comfortable with it - I was shooting in 3 to 4 inch groupings (give or take...not accurately measuring).

The lady at the dealer I buy from said that my face just lit up when I held the XD too - like it was made for me. That was enough for me to "pull the trigger".

Other reasons were capacity, ease of use (loaded and striker indicators are nice if it's dark and you just woke up) and caliber - 45 will leave a big hole in a bad guy.

I completely agree, and share, the plethora of reasons posted by everbody.

But, in case nobody's mentioned it yet, price is a consideration as well.

For the mid $500s price range on new XDs you're getting quality and features similar to pistols that go for $600 or $700.

If you buy them used (like I did) you are looking at a price range of $400 to $500.

And since they have only been out less than 4 years (beginning of 06 I think) there is not much chance of getting one that's worn out enough to have to put money into it.
