I've stated before that I would have liked to see a single stack service-sized XD, but at this point in time I won't be picky. I have medium sized hands but found the grips on the 21 not to be a problem.

I think the appeal for a double stack 45acp is certainly exists in the market. Glock, H&K, and Taurus all offer hi-cap 45acp polymer type models and (from what I see at the ranges) people do like the form factor. Springfield would probably make out well if they offer a 45acp version (I would certainly buy one as soon as it was available.)

I also don't see it cutting into their 1911 business...

Hopefully, Rick's info will pan out into a new series next year.

I think that would be a dumb move. Why was the .45 GAP brought out? For .45 performance in a more manageable grip. If you ask .45 shooters what they like about the 1911 design, alot will say the compact width or slimness. Now a singlestack .45 ACP XD makes alot of sense. Folks on GLocktalk were begging for a singlestack fullsize, but no, Glock gave them a chunky slided G37 etc. I prefer the XD GAP as they were able to keep the slide the same size. I would run and buy a singlestack XD .45, but I think a thicker gun is just plain stupid.

Glock doesn't make 1911's to compete with their .45's either. As for being stupid?... That's one man's opinion. I didn't feel like Springfield following Gaston around like a puppy dog and producing the same gun, was cool either.

And here is my greatest source of confusion (mostly based on ignorance). How well is the G21 selling? How much business is there for a polymer double-stacked .45ACP? Just seems to me that the 1911 is still the glamour gun for a .45ACP.

If SA does this, their goal is to take market share away in an already existing market--they're not creating anything new here. My question is, is there a big enough pie to get a big enough slice to make it worth it for them to do this? It ain't trivial from the manufacturing side of things--it'll be an expensive change. They have to be convinced that it's worth it before they "pull the trigger."

I think there's plenty of business there. As you said, you're not creating anything new here. Firstly they're appealing to their current XD customers who desire a fullsize ACP. Secondly they're appealing to the consumer who has an interest in the XD but hasn't bought one yet because what they really wanted was the ACP. XD is currently losing that guy to Glock and HK. I think it will be worth it just in the sales that they do with the current XD consumers and any piece of that market they take from Glock and HK is a bonus.

Let's not forget politics. If another AWB comes along, the market for hi-cap guns will drop substantially again. In a few more years I think this will be a serious issue and I also think it will make the last ban look like childs play. I hope I'm wrong!!!
If SA is planning on releasing a hi-cap .45xd sooner would be better than later. At least this would give them some time to recoup some of their costs relating to design/engineering/marketing and make a profit on a desirable product. If they smell a ban of some sort, they might just drop the idea, after all, what's the use going to all the trouble if the market isn't there? Just my paranoid thoughts but in this day and age anything is possible.

I for one will be in line for one soon as they hit the market....
Mongoose like .45, makem 9mm look like whimp.

strange that noone else has asked this... all respect to Rich and all, but any chance that this was a catalog misprint? More than I can count I've seen people here in the forum refering to the XD 45 GAP as the 45 ACP, being just simply a typo (probably as a result of their super secret hidden desires for a 45 ACP).

Now, since it listed a model # that is different than the GAP model #'s, it lends more credibility I guess... It certainly would be cool. I liked shooting the 45ACP Glocks, but that damn grip irritates me!

Uh, ok. So do you want the grip longer to get those extra rounds in? I mean what is the point. You have .45 ACP performance in a 9mm sized weapon. You want an even bigger gun for the same performance? I bet they go the single stack route. Imagine an XD in a more trim package.
