revolver danger

I knew that a revolver has gases and sometimes can have shaved lead come out the side where cylinder meets barrel. I had no idea just how dangerous these could be though.
Gotta love Hickkok 45.

I started with revolvers over 40 years ago and only recently did I consider this issue. I always kept my fingers back and I do not remember when or how I figured it out. I also learned not to have papers on my shooting bench, but that was after they too flight (also with a 44 Magnum).

About thirty years ago, I was on the receiving end of shaved led from the shooter to my right at an outdoor range.

I was shooting my Model 29 that day and he shot whatever-it-was.

I got hit by hot lead on my right cheek. It didn't dawn on me what was happening until his shot number two and I got hit again. I told him what was going on, and that his revolver's timing or alignment was off, and that he'd best put that gun away. He looks at me like I'm crazy and continues shooting.

The rangemaster took care of the guy after I alerted him, but I still got a dirty look from the shooter when he left.

Side blast? Yeah, it happens even with very tight cylinder to cone gap. I've had my SP 101 catch me before. I remember seeing a pic of a guy's finger that it too close on either a smith 500 or 460. Took a chunk.

Yep, he's made some great vids!

Heck, one of the reasons I bought my XD(M) 5.25" was because of one of his YouTube videos!

And I really am envious of his range!

Cheers! M2

The cylinder gap is why silencers don't work on revolvers. I never realized until reading this post that this information is not common knowledge. You learn these little things and then forget that everybody else doesn't know about them and don't share them with others. It's the little things that will get you in trouble.
