The FBI load--158gr+P LSWCHP.

Personally, I like the Remington version best.

Any of you guys ever check the ammo test videos on YouTube from tnoutdoors9? Out of his .38 special ammo testing I really liked the Gold Dot small barrel ammo.

From a professional in the industry and leading authority (BUG's: .380 ACP vs. .38 Sp - M4Carbine.net Forums):

Quote:
Currently, the Speer Gold Dot 135 gr +P JHP, Winchester 130 gr bonded +P JHP (RA38B), and Barnes 110 gr XPB all copper JHP (for ex. in the Corbon DPX loading) offer the most reliable expansion we have seen from a .38 sp 2” BUG; Hornady 110 gr standard pressure and +P Critical Defense loads also offer good performance out of 2" barrel revolvers.
I personally carry the 135 gr. Gold Dot, but also have boxes of the Winchester 130 gr. +P.

Ammo to go is out of the Gold Dot and Corbon, but here's the Winchester:

That's less than a buck a round which is pretty good. Its been taking about three weeks for them to ship, though.

I often carry a Smith 64-3 3" and I've tried several different loads but settled on Buffalo Bore GDHP 135 gr +P, they're hot, expand nicely and put out 300 ft/lbs which is a ton for this caliber. I also have some 129 +P Hydra Shoks that put out 255 lbs, comparatively.

Other loads I've used are 110gr Critical Defense and 125gr WWB SJHP +P and they all are accurate enough for the task at hand, in my gun at least. YMMV. Despite my love of the newest designer ammo like T series and HST I've got a stash of a few hundred WWB SJHP and I'm sure they'd put a BG down just fine.

I have Winchester PDX1 38 +P for my wheel gun. Try shopping for ammo online, perhaps Midway or Cheaper Than Dirt. Here where I live, good quality self defense ammo is scarce right now too!
