Interesting.

I seem to recall that I have seen it the other way...I do know that (though it is admittedly not a snub) the S&W TRR8 says no heavier than 125; perhaps that is what I am thinking of.

Research is in order.

It's not mine, but I wish it were.

This one is mine:

"High capacity" snubby. holds 8 .357 magnum. It likes 158 grain JSPs and 140 gr hollowpoints.

And a 125gr load is not going to get the penetration needed to stop Mr. Bear, particularly with most of it's velocity robbed by the short barrel of a snub.

If you are dead set on this course, then I'd recommend a 3" SP101, and nothing shorter. But for what you describe...get a good lightweight snub in .38 for "urban" carry, and get something heavier for out on the farm.
Probably good advice. Funding is the issue there though. I've never ran into a black bear hiking here in the smokies, but the possibility is there. Most of the trails we hike are heavy to medium traffic. From what I have read about black bears they don't usually charge like a grizzly or say kodiak would. Think a +p 38 special would do the trick?

I'm getting a gift in November for a big achievement and I'm almost set on the Night-guard .44mag or a yugo m92 pistol

Since you will be joggins with it, you will want the lightest hammerless gun you can find. Your best options in this category is the Smith 442, 642, 340 or the Ruger LCR. Only the 340 and LCR come in .357, and to be honest, most people dont carry .357 in them either.

I own a Smith 340, a Smith 642, and a Ruger LCR .38 and I find that I carry the Smith about 50% of the time and the LCR for about 50% of the time.

You can buy a nice Smith for about $325 used. They pop up from time to time.

Are there any I'm over looking. I know Taurus and Charter have their scattered problems and it seems like Rossi is having a few on their new guns. I don't really plan on shooting this gun a lot. Occasional range use and I will probably carry it in a belly band when I run. What are your guys personal experiences with what you have. No stories about what happened to joe bob's cousin. I like the smith too but we are building a house right now and money is getting dumped into that so cheaper is better.
Let me touch on this…

As a firearm’s instructor and RSO and running both an indoor and outdoor range I have to ask, “Why?” Believe me I am not trying to be short or smarta** to you, I am asking honestly why.

From our indoor range which is 54 feet ALL the hits on the ceiling and above the target holders are from snubbies. People buy these mostly for CC and I have to say if you in arms reach and can stuff it in the perp’s stomach then it will work. Truth be told and you even said it yourself, most people (NOT ALL but most) get their CC permit and never shot that particular gun much.

With a snubbie that is the worst thing you can do. IT takes a lot to be a good shot with a snub even at only 7 yards. The sighting on a snubbie is much harder than on most other pistols. A lot of them don’t have adjustable sights and most for a rear sight is just a “U” or “V” shaped groove in the frame with a tall front sight. It takes more work to sight in.

So now lets think about a survival situation, all senses are higher, blood pressure is up, adrenalin is really flowing not to mention fear… You will not have time to “work the sight” and point and shoot at a distance with a snubbie is hard to do. Have you ever seen anyone on TV in shooting comp’s using a snubbie? There is a reason… Just take a few minutes and think about it. Some of the best shots can’t do crap with a snubbie at distance… In a life saving situation you just need to be able to point and shoot, JUST focus on the front sight because targets move… Try a moving target at 7 to 10 yards with a snubbie, see if you hit where you could possibly stop the threat… Chances are you won’t be able to.

Again I am not trying to be downing on you, just trying to help you make an informed purchase. Try one with a moving target first if you can hit it before you buy…
