Sad day for my S&W wheeler :( (pic)

I took my S&W mod 19 along w/ my other guns to the range a few days ago. I put a mix of .357 mags (124grn) and .38 special (130grn), about 25/30 rounds of each. Well I finally got to cleaning it today and I found what I thought was a hair at first but it turned out to be a hairline crack.

Do you have any idea what would cause that crack? Is that area of the frame under stress?

Yes, it does! :/

Btw I forgot to add that I got this gun from my father 3 months ago. He bought it new in the early 90's, put 6 rounds through it and it then sat in his desk/ dresser door until 2 years ago when he started joining me at the range again. In total this gun has less than 120 rounds through it.

xpdnc,
That really sucks. I have a Model 19 myself and it is probably my favorite revolver. I'd contact S&W Customer Support and send them the image of the crack... maybe they can somehow make good on a repair/replacement? You could mention safety/catastrophic failure concerns to help motivate them. If Customer Support won't help, then write a letter (not email) to the CEO of the company, voicing your concerns & disappointment, and enclosing a copy of the image:

The pic makes it look like stainless. If so, that's a Model 66.

Either way, that sucks big time.

that's terrible man. the fact that its a beautiful weapon you got from your dad only makes the cracked frame worse. talk about salt in the wound.

In all my years I've never seen one crack like that. 19s are most known for cracking in the forcing cone of the barrel. I never shoot heavy .357 loads in mine as barrels are getting real hard to find. i have a 19-3 4"barrel

Hopefully, S&W can do something...but keep in mind, even though it has a low round count...it's a twenty year old, second hand pistol.

Your father, as the original owner (assuming that he registered the warranty/has the original receipt), may actually have better luck...
